Van Ness station

Van Ness station is an underground Muni Metro station on the Market Street subway at the intersection of Market Street and Van Ness Avenue (U.S. Route 101) in San Francisco, California. The station consists of a concourse mezzanine on the first floor down, and a single island platform on the second level down.

1. History

The station was constructed by BART as part of the Market Street subway. The BART Board approved the name "Van Ness" in December 1965. Service at the station began in February 1980. The station has suffered flooding during heavy rainstorms, including one in October 2009, and another in December 2014 which damaged an electrical equipment room. In February 2017, the SFMTA signed a $1.9 million contract to repair water-damaged wiring in the room. Surface stops on Van Ness Avenue at Market Street are the southern end of the Van Ness Bus Rapid Transit route, which began service on April 1, 2022. The northeast headhouse was closed on March 11, 2023, for an estimated six months during construction of an adjacent building. Under the proposed western variant of the planned Better Market Street project, the outbound F stop would be moved across the intersection.

Fillmore West

The Fillmore West was a historic rock and roll music venue in San Francisco, California, US which became famous under the direction of concert promoter Bill Graham from 1968 to 1971. Named after The Fillmore at the intersection of Fillmore Street and Geary Boulevard (which was Graham's principal venue from 1966 to 1968), it stood at the southwest corner of Market Street and South Van Ness Avenue in the Civic Center district. In June 2018, the top two floors of the building reopened as SVN West, a new concert and corporate event venue.

La Mamelle, Inc. / Art Com was a not-for-profit arts organization, artist-run space, or alternative exhibition space, active from 1975 through 1995, and was located at 70-12th Street in the South of Market-area of San Francisco, California. The organization's first venture was publishing but it became involved in a multiplicity of activities including maintaining an artists' space and presenting exhibitions and events of mail art, performance art, conceptual photography, video art production and screenings, a library, distributing artist-produced works, and creating one of the first artists' online networks.
