Cottam Parkway railway station

Cottam Parkway is a proposed railway station to the west of Preston, England. The proposed station would serve existing and new developments in the Lea civil parish.

1. Development

As part of the original Preston Local Plan, the station would have been constructed in 2022/23 adjacent to the Preston Western Distributor Road, which links to the M55 motorway. In the amended plan the Cottam station looked set to be removed because of uncertainty over its location. Preston was shortlisted for the Transforming City Fund, including a proposal to fund Cottam railway station. It was then planned to submit a planning application in 2022, which if successful would have led to an opening in 2024 or 2025. The tender notice by Octavia construction puts the dates at 16 March 2026 to 29 September 2028. The plan is to locate it on the Preston to Blackpool section. Construction may have required the closure of the neighbouring Salwick railway station, as referred to in Page 38 of the Central Lancashire Highways and Transport Masterplan. In December 2020 Lancashire County Council agreed to acquire land to assist with the construction of the station and access roads. LCC submitted a planning application in October 2022. Planning permission for the new station was granted in September 2023 (Lancashire County Council ref LCC/2022/0049). A vote by Preston County Council in August 2024 threatened the entire project. A negotiated settlement over new homes put the project back on track a few days later.

1. Location

The station would be near the site of the former Lea Road railway station between Lea Road and Sidgreaves Lane. It was planned to be part of the construction of a new distributor road linking the M55 with the A583, which began in September 2019 and opened as Edith Rigby Way, part of the A582, on 3 July 2023.

Lea Road railway station ( LEE-ə) was on the Preston and Wyre Joint Railway in the parish of Lea and Cottam in Preston, Lancashire, England. It opened in 1842, and closed on 2 May 1938. Lea Road was located adjacent to the site of the proposed Cottam railway station.

Larches is one of the districts of Preston, Lancashire, England. The area, north-west of Preston city centre, is a mix of social and private housing, although both components of the ward – Larches, and Savick – are largely post-war council estates. Ashton Park is in the middle of the current ward, which borders Riversway and the civil parish of Lea. The area of Larches is part of Ashton-on-Ribble, which was part of the former hundred of Amounderness. With small businesses and shops in the area, the population are largely commute-to-work families and retirees. The citywide Preston Bus service runs through both sides of the Larches ward, and routes operated by Stagecoach between Preston and Blackpool also serve the area. Three members of Preston City Council, elected 'in thirds' in first past the post elections each year, are returned from the ward. The ward and neighbouring Ashton forms part of the Lancashire County Council electoral division of Preston North West.

Tulketh Priory

Tulketh Priory was a priory in Ashton-on-Ribble, Lancashire, England. The priory was the home of a group of Cistercian monks from Savigny Abbey in Normandy until they moved to Furness Abbey in 1127. Tulketh Hall was later built on the site of the priory.

Ashton Community Science College is a coeducational secondary school located in the Ashton-on-Ribble area of Preston in the English county of Lancashire. It is a community school administered by Lancashire County Council. The school also has a specialism in science. Feeder primary schools include Ashton Primary School and St Andrews CE Primary School in Ashton-on-Ribble, Lea Community Primary School and Lea Endowed CE Primary School in Lea, and Cottam Primary School in Cottam. Ashton Community Science College offers GCSEs, BTECs and OCR Nationals as programmes of study for pupils. The school also offers The Duke of Edinburgh's Award programme. The school was originally called Ashton-on-Ribble High School.
