St Martin's Church, Whenby
St Martin's Church is a redundant Anglican church in the village of Whenby, North Yorkshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.
Fulneck School
Fulneck School was an independent day and boarding school, situated in the Fulneck Moravian Settlement, in Pudsey, West Yorkshire, England. For 272 years, it provided education for pupils between the ages of 3 and 18. It closed on 8 July 2025. The School buildings are part of the Fulneck Moravian settlement, which includes the Church, Museum, multiple resident buildings and shops and is named after Fulnek, Czechia.
In 2025, it was announced that Fulneck would close after the 2024-2025 School Year.
Kellington Windmill
Kellington Windmill is a historic building in Kellington, a village in North Yorkshire, in England.
The windmill was built in about 1800, to grind corn. It originally had four floors and was powered solely by wind, but a paraffin engine was added so it could be used during calm periods, and after the First World War the sails were no longer in use. Milling ended in 1927, and the building was disused until the Second World War, when it was used as a look out post by the Home Guard. It was converted into a house, but then became derelict. For a short time it was used to grow mushrooms, but was then reconverted into a house.
The windmill was grade II listed in 1987. It is built of magnesian limestone with some rendering and brick infill. It contains doorways and casement windows, all under segmental arches. It originally had a cap, which is now missing.
Carbeth
Carbeth is a hamlet in Stirlingshire, 2+1⁄2 miles (4 kilometres) west of Strathblane and 5+1⁄2 miles (9 kilometres) north of Clydebank. Named features include Carbeth Hill, Carbeth Loch and the estate of Carbeth Guthrie. There is a community of huts here which was established in 1918 after the First World War, as a summer camp for returned soldiers.
Derwent Tower
Derwent Tower was a 29-storey residential apartment building in Dunston, Tyne and Wear, United Kingdom, opened in 1972. Due to its unusual shape it was nicknamed the "Dunston Rocket" during construction (even before its official Derwent Tower title) and the name remained with locals throughout its life. It was demolished in 2012.
The tower was designed by the Owen Luder Partnership on behalf of Whickham urban district Council, which controlled the Dunston area of Gateshead. The original brief was for three high-rise blocks of at least 22 storeys, but due to adverse ground conditions on site the decision was made to build one tower, with the rest being low-rise blocks of two to five storeys. Despite the architect's advice against construction of a high-rise building on the site, the council were strongly in favour. Following many consultations and explanatory models of the foundations with specialists, construction of the foundations began in February 1968, and the tower was completed in March 1971.
Construction was complex because of the very poor ground conditions. The foundations were based on a sunken concrete caisson that was built above ground then sunk over a period of time. Caisson foundations are often found in harbour construction; being used in the 1960s for a local authority tower block was a first, and the caisson became an underground garage area for residents.
The tower had a very bold and striking appearance, unlike any other tower block or high rise building in the UK. It was of a Brutalist design with many design similarities with Gateshead's "Get Carter car park" also a product of the Owen Luder Partnership. The tower housed two-bedroom flats up to the 10th floor and one-bedroom flats on floors 11 to 29. It featured in a 1970s advert for Tudor Crisps.

The tower was in desperate need of refurbishment for many years, making it unpopular with residents and locals. It had been allowed to fall into a run-down state through neglect and lack of maintenance. Services breakdowns, lift failures, water supply faults were all common but were unlikely to be a result of the tower's design or construction methods. In 2007 Gateshead Council decided to relocate residents amid health and safety concerns over the already poor and deteriorating services.
On 17 August 2009 the tower failed in gaining listed status on the grounds of it being a non-listable building. In January 2012 demolition began, completed in September 2012.
Church of St Mary the Virgin, Prestwich
The Church of St Mary the Virgin is on Church Lane, Prestwich, Greater Manchester, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Radcliffe and Prestwich, the archdeaconry of Bolton and the diocese of Manchester. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. Pevsner refers to it as "a major church".
Chetham's School of Music
Chetham's School of Music () is a private co-educational boarding and day music school in Manchester, England. Chetham's educates pupils between the ages of 8 and 18, all of whom enter via musical auditions.
The music school was established in 1969 from Chetham's Hospital School, founded as a charity school by Humphrey Chetham in 1653. After becoming a boys' grammar school in 1952, the school turned to music as its speciality, at the same time becoming a private school and accepting its first female students. There are approximately 300 students on roll, including a large sixth form making up around half of the school. Approximately two-thirds of students board on site, with others travelling in as day students from around Greater Manchester. The oldest parts of the school date to the 1420s, when the building was constructed as a residence for priests of the church which is now Manchester Cathedral. These parts are listed buildings housing Chetham's Library.
Academic and music teaching moved into a new, building in 2012; this replaced the Victorian Palatine building and allowed easier access for concert visitors. A 482-seat concert hall, Stoller Hall, opened within the New School Building in 2017.
Aberargie
Aberargie (Scottish Gaelic: Obar Fhargaidh) is a village in the south eastern region of Perth and Kinross and the historic county of Perthshire.
It lies on the western edge of the Abernethy civil parish on the banks of the River Farg, from which it derives its name. Aberargie is around 2.5 kilometres (1+1⁄2 miles) west of Abernethy, and 3.5 kilometres (2+1⁄4 miles) southeast of Bridge of Earn.
Kirkby Malham
Kirkby Malham is a small village and civil parish in the county of North Yorkshire, England. Situated in the Yorkshire Dales it lies 6 miles (9.7 km) east of Settle. The population of the civil parish as taken in the 2011 Census (including Hanlith and Scosthrop) was 202. Nearby settlements include Hanlith, Malham, Airton and Calton.
Dalton-Ellis Hall
Dalton-Ellis Hall is a hall of residence complex at the University of Manchester in Manchester, England. It is situated in the south of the city on Conyngham Road in Victoria Park, next to St Chrysostom's Church. It is close to Wilmslow Road in Rusholme. Dalton-Ellis has 279 male and female residents in catered accommodation. The hall admits both undergraduate and postgraduate students; most are undergraduate first years.
The complex comprises several residential blocks built at various stages. They include the Grade II listed Main Hall, the first purpose-built hall of residence in England, opened in 1882, the Nield Wing extension to Main Hall, Fiddes, Graham, Ewings, and Sutherland built in 1994. Dalton-Ellis Hall has a second Grade II listed block, Eaglesfield, which is not currently in use.
Sunnyside houses the complex's library and music rooms and other facilities include a squash court, tennis courts, croquet lawn, and a bar. There is a computer cluster and a reading room. The hall also has a history of sporting success fielding rugby, hockey, netball, cricket, football and croquet teams.
Falls of Clyde (waterfalls)
The Falls of Clyde are a series of linns or waterfalls on the River Clyde, near Lanark, Scotland. They are renowned for their beauty and have frequently been painted by artists. There are four in total: Bonnington Linn, Corra Linn, and Dundaff Linn, all above Lanark, and Stonebyres Linn, some distance below the town. The highest and most impressive of the four is Corra Linn, with a fall of 84 feet (26 m).
Brightside, Sheffield
Brightside is an industrial area of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England lying on a hill north of Attercliffe and the River Don.
Brightside was recorded in the fifteenth century as "Brekesherth", when it was home to some mills. Brightside Bierlow was one of the six original divisions of the township of Sheffield, including all the land in the town north of the Don - reaching as far as the Wicker and Neepsend.
The first work on the Sheffield and Rotherham Railway was the opening of a cutting in Brightside in 1837. Brightside railway station was opened along with the line in 1838, but closed in 1995. Now the nearest railway station is in Meadowhall (which geographically is in the Shiregreen and Brightside ward) just south of Wincobank. In the 1830s, the only industry in the village was a forge on the river bank. A guide produced for the opening of the railway described Brightside as being "...much frequented by pleasure parties from Sheffield. On every fine Sabbath especially, the sallow artizan may be seen wending his way thither, to inhale the freshness of the country air, and enjoy the beautiful and extensive prospect which the hill affords. The opening of the railway has not been productive of much benefit to it in this respect. Those who, when performing their peregrinations on foot, were compelled to confine them within a circuit of a mile or two round Sheffield, can now ride to Rotherham for sixpence; and the consequence is, that the publicans of Brightside have the mortification of beholding their quondam customers gliding past their very doors to consign to the pockets of the more fortunate retailers of spirits in a more distant town, those gains which they had been accustomed to calculate upon as theirs."
St Thomas' Church opened in 1854, and now serves at the training school for Greentop Circus.
By 1860, industries were growing in the area, with steel and cutlery manufacture being the main trades. Industry continued to grow, and by the early 1970s, it was mostly industrial, and home to a major railway marshalling yard.
Sheffield Brightside was also the name of one of Sheffield's six Parliamentary constituencies until declining population lead to the formation of the larger Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough.
Crayke
Crayke is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England, about 2 miles (3.2 km) east of Easingwold.
Hornby-with-Farleton
Hornby-with-Farleton is a civil parish in the City of Lancaster in Lancashire, England. It had a population of 729 recorded in the 2001 census, increasing marginally to 730 at the 2011 census. The parish is about 8.5 miles (13.7 km) north-east of Lancaster and consists of two villages: Hornby and Farleton, both on the A683 road. The parish was formed 24 March 1887 from the parishes of "Hornby" and "Farleton".
Braithwell
Braithwell is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England. It is about 1 mile (1.6 km) north from Maltby and 3 miles (5 km) south-east from Conisbrough. According to the 2001 Census the civil parish had a population of 1,056, increasing slightly to 1,060 at the 2011 Census.
The name Braithwell derives from the Old English brādwella meaning 'broad well'. Brād was later replaced by the Old Norse breiðr.
In 1289, the village obtained a Royal Charter entitling it to hold a weekly Tuesday market and an annual eight-day fair – an unusually long duration. These were long discontinued by a survey of 1652, but a cross shaft survives with an inscription in Norman French which translates as "Jesus, son of Mary, think upon the brother of our king, I beseech you".
The Church of St James in the village is a Grade II* listed building.
Fort Matilda railway station
Fort Matilda railway station lies at the far western edge of the town of Greenock, Scotland. It is a non-staffed station, and is the last stop before the terminus of Gourock railway station on the Inverclyde Line out of Glasgow Central station.
Green Gable
Green Gable is a fell in the English Lake District often traversed by walkers en route to its more famous neighbour Great Gable. It can be ascended from Honister Pass, Seathwaite in Borrowdale, or Ennerdale. There are good views of Gable Crag, Scafell Pike and the Buttermere valley from the summit.
Friends Meeting House, Kendal
Kendal Friends Meeting House is a Friends meeting house of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in Kendal, Cumbria, in north-western England.
There have been Quakers in Kendal since the 17th century when the town was visited by George Fox. The present meeting house was purpose-built in 1816 to replace the previous building used by local Quakers. Attendance at Sunday worship in 1816 numbered several hundred.
Hest Bank railway station
Hest Bank railway station was opened by the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway (L&CR) three miles north of Lancaster Castle railway station. The line had been authorised in 1844 and a station was proposed for the village of Hest Bank, Lancashire, the following year. It opened in 1846 along with the line. The station continued to serve the village of Hest Bank until its closure in 1969. The site remains notable as being the point at which the present-day West Coast Main Line (WCML) comes nearest to the west coast. Views of Morecambe Bay can be glimpsed from trains on this section of the line.
Meanwhile, the "little" North Western Railway had been formed to link Skipton to Lancaster and with the Morecambe Harbour and Railway planned to make a junction with the L&CR at Hest Bank. Regrettably this never materialised. Hoping to develop an export trade in coke and other minerals, the L&CR applied on its own account to build the branch to Morecambe, receiving permission in 1859. At this point the line was leased by the London and North Western Railway (LNWR) and it was the latter that built the branch as a double track opening in 1864. In time however the branch was singled, but with an increase in holiday trade a south facing curve was added to the junction during 1888. Later a part of the branch from Bare Lane was redoubled and is still open as the Morecambe Branch Line.
Hest Bank station itself was of rugged stone construction, a two-storey station house with a booking hall below on the up (southbound) platform. It was next to a level crossing over a minor road linking the A589 with houses, a water treatment works and a caravan park further along the foreshore. A small cottage for the crossing keeper was provided on the down (coastal-facing) side along with a footbridge to connect the platforms. The down side also had two sidings, one providing a bay platform.
At grouping in 1923 it became part of the London Midland and Scottish Railway.
During the 'thirties the station became remarkable as the only one between Preston and Carlisle with electric lighting, thanks to the ingenuity of a member of staff. Four camping coaches were positioned here by the London Midland Region from 1960 to 1963, then it increased to five until 1969. The goods yard closed on 2 December 1963 but the tracks were used for the camping coaches until the end of the 1969 season despite the station finally closing to passengers in February 1969.
All traces of the platforms and buildings have disappeared (though the crossing keeper's cottage survived until 2012), as the incoming Morecambe branch was extended along the length of one of the former platforms as part of the layout changes associated with the 1973 WCML electrification scheme.
The nearby signal box still stands although now disused. Its latter role, purely as a manually controlled gate box to supervise the adjacent level crossing and that at nearby Bolton-le-Sands, was brought to an end in the Spring of 2013. NR had published proposals to close the box here initially at the end of 2012, which was briefly postponed until February 2013 before the work was finally carried out in May. Both crossings are now worked direct from Preston PSB using CCTV.
Richmond Castle
Richmond Castle in Richmond, North Yorkshire, England, stands in a commanding position above the River Swale, close to the centre of the town of Richmond. It was originally called Riche Mount, 'the strong hill'. The castle was constructed by Alan Rufus from 1071 onwards following the Norman Conquest of England, and the Domesday Book of 1086 refers to 'a castlery' at Richmond.
In the 12th century, his great-nephew Conan expanded the castle and built the keep. Although it was derelict by 1540, it was restored centuries later. The property is the best-preserved early Norman castle in England and an important tourist attraction.
The building is Grade I listed and under the care of English Heritage.
