Selby High School

Selby High School is a co-educational secondary school in North Yorkshire, England. Its main catchment area is the town of Selby and villages from the Selby District, including Thorpe Willoughby, Hambleton, Monk Fryston, Cawood and Wistow.

1. History

Selby High School links back to Selby Grammar School, founded in 1908 as an all-girls school as Selby High School. In 1967 this changed to the Selby Grammar School grammar school and became coeducational, and in 1979, a mixed comprehensive school. The comprehensive was renamed Selby High School.

1. Buildings

In 2003 Selby High School began fundraising towards securing specialist school status – the school was awarded specialist status in Performing and Visual Arts in 2005. Following this the school built a dance studio, a 325-seat theatre stand and an all-weather pitch. In September 2010 the school was awarded specialist status in Science. The school maintains these specialisms in the present day. In January 2013 the school added an ICT suite with new computers. In 2017 it added the Eckersley Centre, named after the previous headmaster, Paul Eckersley.

Selby (Brayton Gates) railway station

Selby (Brayton Gates) was the initial, temporary southern terminus of the short Cawood, Wistow and Selby Light Railway (CW&SLR) in North Yorkshire, England. The line was connected to the North Eastern Railway (NER) nearby. The station is sometimes referred to as "Brayton Gates" or plain "Selby", though it was around a mile from the much larger Selby station.

Selby Almshouses

Selby Almshouses are a historic building in Selby, a town in North Yorkshire, in England. The building, comprising ten houses in three ranges around a courtyard, was constructed to house poor widows or elderly people. They were designed and funded by James Audus and were completed in 1833. The building was grade II listed in 1980, and is now run by the Audus charity. The almshouses are built of brown brick with hipped slate roofs. They have two storeys, three bays on the east side, and four on the west and south sides. The windows are casements with channelled voussoirs. In the middle of the south range is a low tower with an embattled parapet and crocketed corner pinnacles. It contains an entrance with a pointed head, a moulded surround, a crocketed ogee head, and an elaborate finial. Above the entrance is an inscribed and dated plaque.

Selby District

Selby District was a local government district of North Yorkshire, England, from 1974 to 2023. Its council was based in the town of Selby. The district had a population of 83,449 at the 2011 Census. The southernmost district of North Yorkshire, it bordered the City of York unitary authority, the Borough of Harrogate in North Yorkshire, the City of Leeds and City of Wakefield districts in West Yorkshire, the City of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, and the ceremonial county of the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Selby Rural District

Selby was a rural district in the West Riding of Yorkshire from 1894 to 1974. It was formed under the Local Government Act 1894 (56 & 57 Vict. c. 73) from that part of the Selby rural sanitary district which was in the West Riding (the East Riding parts going on to form the Riccal Rural District). It remained largely unchanged, although it lost the parishes of Biggin and Little Fenton to Tadcaster Rural District on 1 April 1937. It was abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, going to form part of an enlarged district of Selby, in North Yorkshire.
