Selby High School

Selby High School is a co-educational secondary school in North Yorkshire, England. Its main catchment area is the town of Selby and villages from the Selby District, including Thorpe Willoughby, Hambleton, Monk Fryston, Cawood and Wistow.

1. History

Selby High School links back to Selby Grammar School, founded in 1908 as an all-girls school as Selby High School. In 1967 this changed to the Selby Grammar School grammar school and became coeducational, and in 1979, a mixed comprehensive school. The comprehensive was renamed Selby High School.

1. Buildings

In 2003 Selby High School began fundraising towards securing specialist school status – the school was awarded specialist status in Performing and Visual Arts in 2005. Following this the school built a dance studio, a 325-seat theatre stand and an all-weather pitch. In September 2010 the school was awarded specialist status in Science. The school maintains these specialisms in the present day. In January 2013 the school added an ICT suite with new computers. In 2017 it added the Eckersley Centre, named after the previous headmaster, Paul Eckersley.

Située à 20 km au sud de York, le long de l’Ouse du Yorkshire, Selby est, avec une population de 13 012 habitants, la plus grande ville et la plus peuplée de son district. Historiquement rattachée à la marche ouest du Yorkshire, l'essentiel des richesses de la ville venait du trafic fluvial sur l’Ouse. Autrefois, Selby s'enorgueillissait de son port et de ses ateliers de construction navale desservis par le Canal de Selby, qui était la voie commerciale vers Leeds. Son exploitation minière, liée à l'extraction de houille, était également au XXe siècle l'une des plus modernes et des plus rentables du Royaume-Uni.

Abbaye de Selby

L'abbaye de Selby est une ancienne abbaye située à Selby, dans le Yorkshire du Nord, en Angleterre. L'abbaye est fondée en 1256. Depuis la réforme protestante, elle a été une église paroissiale de l'Église d'Angleterre. Elle est dédiée à la Sainte Vierge Marie et Saint-Germain de Paris. C'est l'une des plus grandes églises paroissiales de Grande-Bretagne et elle est plus grande que la plupart des cathédrales de l'île. Un élément remarquable de l'abbaye est le vitrail Washington du XIVe siècle, représentant les armoiries des ancêtres de George Washington, premier président des États-Unis d'Amérique : les motifs sont parfois cités comme une source d'inspiration du Stars and Stripes. La tradition rapporte que le moine Benoît d'Auxerre aurait fondé l'abbaye après avoir aperçu trois cygnes sur un lac à Selby, y voyant un symbole du Père, du Fils et du Saint-Esprit. C'est pourquoi le blason de Selby comporte trois cygnes.
