Le pont Saint-Martial, à Limoges, est un pont voûté en maçonnerie construit en 1215 sur les bases d'un pont gallo-romain.

1. Historique

Il est situé en contrebas de l'ancien forum gallo-romain - actuel hôtel de ville - dans le prolongement de l'ancien cardo maximus, axe principal nord-sud de la ville antique. Ce pont fut à l'origine construit par les Romains afin de traverser à sec la Vienne et facilitait ainsi les échanges sur la voie reliant Avaricum (Bourges) et le sud de la Gaule. En 1182, Henri II Plantagenêt, roi d'Angleterre, duc d'Aquitaine et donc suzerain de Limoges, fit détruire le pont gallo-romain pour punir la cité de son infidélité. Le pont ne fut reconstruit que trente-trois ans plus tard sur les bases de l'édifice antique. Le 20 juillet 1908, le pont est classé au titre des monuments historiques.

1. Description

Le pont possède sept arches en arc ; un quartier s'était développé sur la rive droite de la Vienne autour de l'église Sainte-Félicité. Il existe encore quelques demeures médiévales et classiques, dont l'une accueillit Molière durant une nuit en 1669. Aujourd'hui il apparaît isolé du reste de la ville, dominé par le pont de la Révolution, le quai Saint-Martial, et sur l'autre rive par la rue de Babylone prolongée par la route de Nexon.

The Diocese of Limoges (Latin: Dioecesis Lemovicensis; French: Diocèse de Limoges) is a Latin Church diocese of the Catholic Church in France. The diocese comprises the départments of Haute-Vienne and Creuse. After the Concordat of 1801, the See of Limoges lost twenty-four parishes from the district of Nontron which were annexed to the Diocese of Périgueux, and forty-four from the district of Confolens, transferred to the Diocese of Angoulême; but until 1822 it included the entire ancient Diocese of Tulle, when the latter was reorganized. Since 2002, the diocese has been suffragan to the Archdiocese of Poitiers, after transferral from the Archdiocese of Bourges. In 2021, in the Diocese of Limoges there was one priest for every 6,766 Catholics.

The University of Limoges (Université de Limoges) is a French public university, based in Limoges. Its chancellor is the rector of the Academy of Limoges (an administrative district in France for education and research). It counts more than 16,000 students and near 1,000 scholars and researchers. It offers complete curricula up to the doctorates and beyond in the traditional areas of knowledge. It was structured in October 1968 by the grouping of higher education institutions in Limoges.
