Carlton, Selby

Carlton is a village and civil parish in southern North Yorkshire, England. The village is situated approximately 5 miles (8 km) south-east of the town of Selby on the A1041 road. The parish had a population of 1,934 at the 2011 Census, an increase from 1,829 at the 2001 Census. Carlton was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1 April 1974, when it became part of the Selby District of the new ceremonial county of North Yorkshire. On 1 April 2023, Selby District was abolished and Carlton became part of the new North Yorkshire unitary authority area. Holy Family Catholic High School is a secondary school located in the village. Carlton Primary School, which was called Carlton-in-Snaith Community Primary School prior to 2020, is also located in the village.

St Mary's Anglican Church, Carlton

St Mary's Church is an Anglican parish church in Carlton, a village near Selby in North Yorkshire, in England. The first church in Carlton was a wooden chapel of ease to St Laurence's Church, Snaith, built in 1379. In 1861, Carlton was granted its own parish, and work commenced on a new building, completed in 1866. It was designed by J. B. Atkinson, and was partly funded by Isabella Anne Stapleton. It was Grade II listed in 1986. The church is built of sandstone with Welsh slate roofs, and consists of a nave, a south porch, a chancel, a north vestry and a southwest steeple, and is in Gothic Revival style. The steeple has a tower with two stages, angle buttresses, a stair turret, tall two-light bell openings, and an octagonal broach spire with a clock face. There are a variety of two- and three-light pointed windows in the nave and vestry, and single lights and a four-light east window in the chancel. Inside, there is a hammer beam roof in the nave, a trefoil piscina, and some wall memorials, one dating from 1738.

St Mary's Catholic Church, Carlton

St Mary's Church is a Catholic parish church in Carlton, a village near Selby in North Yorkshire, in England. Until the mid-19th century, Catholic worship took place in a chapel at what became Carlton Towers. In 1839, Miles Stapleton inherited the property, and decided to commission a Catholic chapel in the nearby village of Carlton. It was designed by M. E. Hadfield, and construction started in June 1841, with the first service in the new church taking place on 31 August 1842. The altar and reredos were added in about 1876, and side altars in 1904. The church was restored by Weightman & Brown in the 1980s, while the east end was reordered in 1992, with new sanctuary furniture installed. The church was Grade II* listed in 1993. The church is built of white brick with stone dressings and Welsh slate roofs. It consists of a nave with a south porch, and a chancel with a north vestry. On the southwest corner is a gabled bellcote with a pointed arch. Above the three-light east window is a canopied niche. Inside the church are the original pews, and three chancel chairs made by Robert Thompson. Attached to the church by a brick link is a presbytery, also dating from 1842.

Carlton Towers

Carlton Towers in the civil parish of Carlton, 5 miles (8 km) south-east of Selby, North Yorkshire, England, is a Grade I listed country house, in the Gothic Revival style, and is surrounded by a 250-acre park. The house was re-built to its present form in 1873–1875 by Henry Stapleton, 9th Baron Beaumont (1848–1892), whose father Miles Stapleton, 8th Baron Beaumont (1805–1854) had in 1840 inherited the title Baron Beaumont, in abeyance since 1507. His architect was Edward Welby Pugin, who "encased and incorporated" the earlier manor house dating from 1614 into a larger structure. He sold much of the estate to finance the building work. The 9th Baron died of pneumonia, without issue, and it passed to his younger brother the 10th Baron. The house is now the property of the 10th Baron's great-grandson Edward Fitzalan-Howard, 18th Duke of Norfolk, 13th Baron Beaumont (born 1956) of Arundel Castle in Sussex, who has allowed it to become the home of his younger brother, Lord Gerald Fitzalan-Howard (born 1962). The main parts of the house are available for hire for wedding receptions and other events.
