Smallthorne Urban District
Smallthorne Urban District was an urban district in Staffordshire, England. It was initially formed of the Smallthorne civil parish. In 1904 the Chell and Milton civil parishes were added. It was abolished in 1922 with the bulk of it becoming part of the county borough of Stoke-on-Trent. After absorption, the area of the UDC was divided into two wards for election of local councillors. Ward 27 covered Smallthorne, Bradeley, Norton-in-the-Moors, Ball Green, Fegg Hayes, and Brindley Ford. Ward 28 included Milton, Abbey Hulton and Bucknall.

Holden Viaduct
Holden Viaduct, in Sneyd Green, Stoke-on-Trent, carries the A5272, here called Hanley Road. It spans a cutting through which runs Leek New Road, the A53. On each side of the viaduct is a ramp leading down to the A53.
Although it is officially a viaduct, it is quite short and has only one span. It is usually known as "Holden Bridge". It is a notable feature for motorists travelling along Leek New Road, which is perfectly straight here.
A plaque on the balustrade reads: City of Stoke-on-Trent, Holden Viaduct. This bridge was opened by Mrs J W Oakes on the 14th July 1930, and was erected to replace the original structure built in 1844. Major J Kent DSO Chairman, Councillor J W Oakes Vice-Chairman, Highways Committee.
A short way north-east along Leek New Road, at the junction with Berwick Road, there was until recently a pub called The Holden Bridge; it closed in 2007, and has since been demolished.

Norton United F.C.
Norton United F.C. was a football club based in Smallthorne, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England. They were established in 1989 and joined the Staffordshire Senior League in the same year. They were the Midland League champions three times, North West Counties Football League champions in 2013–14, and were promoted to be members of the Northern Premier League Division One South. On 9 April 2015 it was announced that Norton United would resign from the Northern Premier League at the end of the season and fold.
The club's ground was the Norton Cricket Club & Miners Welfare Institute; however' they left that ground mid season due to contractual issues with the owners and played their remaining fixtures at Lyme Valley Stadium, home of Newcastle Town.. They played in black and red striped shirts, black shorts and black socks.

Smallthorne borders Bradeley and Chell in the north, Norton-in-the-Moors in the east, Sneyd Green in the south, and Burslem in the west.

Sneyd Colliery Disaster
The Sneyd Colliery Disaster was a coal mining accident on 1 January 1942 in Burslem in the English city of Stoke-on-Trent. An underground explosion occurred at 7:50 am, caused by sparks from wagons underground igniting coal dust. A total of 57 men and boys died.
