Craigievar Estate

Craigievar Estate is a modern housing estate situated in the suburb of East Craigs to the west of Edinburgh, Scotland. The name comes from Craigievar Castle in Aberdeenshire.

1. History

The estate was built in 1973 by Barratt Homes on agricultural land previously owned by the Scottish Agricultural Science Agency. The estate consists, principally, of two or three bedroomed detached or semi-detached housing.

1. Layout

The estate's two main access roads, Craigs Drive and Craigs Park, are both cul-de-sacs with housing arranged around landscaped courtyards off to each side. This design creates a safe and open environment typical of planning ideals in the 70's. Thought has been giving to parking provision and most houses have their own garages. There is also ample on-street parking when required.

1. Appearance

Strict controls on external alterations to property have meant that the estate has retained its original appearance. All the houses have grey brick up to the ground floor ceiling level and above this they are pebbledashed in brilliant white stone.

Craigmount High School

Craigmount High School is a non-denominational secondary school in Edinburgh, Scotland with approximately 1,350 pupils located in the west of Edinburgh, Scotland. It is situated between Corstorphine, East Craigs and Drumbrae and it moved into new premises at the beginning of the 2003 academic year. In April 2016, the new building was closed down by Edinburgh Council due to safety concerns; measures were put in place to continue classes in other premises. The new building reopened as of August 2016 when the building met the minimum safety standards.

East Craigs

East Craigs is a residential district of Edinburgh located in the north-west of the city, on the western flanks of Corstorphine Hill. It lies next to what remains of the green belt, and prior to development was a working farm. Development of the area began in 1922 when East Craigs Farm was purchased by the Scottish Agricultural Science Agency (SASA) as a centre for agricultural research. However, much of the land was made available to housing developers from the 1930s onwards. It neighbours West Craigs (which is much less developed, at present), Craigmount, Maybury, Drumbrae and Corstorphine.

Bughtlin

Bughtlin is a suburb of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It is east of the A902. The area is near Maybury, Cammo, East Craigs and Barnton. Most of the buildings are of modern construction.

Maybury

Maybury is an area on the western edge of Edinburgh, Scotland, near South Gyle and Ingliston, named after the road, which is itself named after the civil engineer Sir Henry Maybury (1864–1943). In 2021, residents have been undertaking community clean ups to clear the foot paths along the road. The area is residential in the north east/east and commercial in the south and west and The Gyle Shopping Centre is nearby. In 2021, there was a consultation about creating a Primary School and Health Centre in Maybury.
