It is situated on the north bank of the River Ouse, downstream from York, Selby and Goole. Saltmarshe is approximately 3 miles (5 km) south-east from Howden and 21 miles (34 km) south-east from York. In 1931 the parish had a population of 82. Saltmarshe lies within the Parliamentary constituency of Goole and Pocklington. Saltmarshe Hall is a Grade II* listed 19th-century country house on the western edge of the hamlet. Saltmarshe railway station is on the Sheffield to Hull Line. It is named after Saltmarshe, but is 1 mile (1.6 km) to the north near the village of Laxton.

The civil parish is formed by the village of Reedness and the hamlet of Little Reedness. According to the 2011 UK census, Reedness parish had a population of 339, a decrease on the 2001 UK census figure of 355. The parish was part of the Goole Rural District in the West Riding of Yorkshire from 1894 to 1974, then in Boothferry district of Humberside until 1996. The name Reedness derives from the Old English hrēodnæss meaning 'reed ness (promontory)'.
