Located on the line linking Leeds to Doncaster via Wakefield, immediately south-east of the point where it passes beneath Church Lane, the present station is the second to serve Adwick: the first, the main building of which still stands, lay on the other side of the present road bridge.

Adwick lends its name to the wider Adwick le Street & Carcroft ward of Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, which also includes Carcroft, Woodlands and Highfields. These had a combined population of 16,518 at the time of the 2021 Census. As of 2023, the largest of these settlements independently is Woodlands, with a confirmed population of 7,100.
Adwick's district, in the 1920s, had a population of around 12,000. The West Riding of Yorkshire's Adwick le Street Urban District existed until 1974. Within the former urban district lies the model village of Woodlands, built for Brodsworth Colliery.
