Turnhouse Golf Club

Turnhouse Golf Club is a golf club situated in the West of Edinburgh on Lennie Hill at Turnhouse, Scotland.

1. History

The course dates back to 1897 when there were only 9-holes. By 1900, the layout was expanded to 18 holes and James Braid made amendments to the original layout in 1924. This has been the home of Turnhouse Golf Club since the name changed from the Lothian Golf Club in 1909.

1. Contemporary times

The club host an annual 7-day tournament which is regarded as one of the best in the Lothians and usually attracts high calibre players from far and wide. The layout has changed in recent years to include a brand new 5th hole in addition to the reshaping of many of the original greens.

1. Junior golf

In 2005, Turnhouse became the first Edinburgh golf club to offer ClubGolf junior golf coaching. Their member, Iain Holt, has recently won a national award in recognition of his achievements. In 2013, the Turnhouse Junior team won a triple of the Edinburgh Summer League, the Edinburgh Inter Club and also the Scottish final of the Junior Team Golf Home Nations event. The latter victory saw the team qualifying as Scottish Champions for the Home Nations Championship in Spain.

Turnhouse

Turnhouse is a suburb in the west of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, near Maybury, Gogar, Cammo and West Craigs. The area is south east of Edinburgh Airport, and Turnhouse is also the name for the former Royal Air Force base (RAF Turnhouse), now closed, which dates back to the First World War and was the origin of the current civilian airport. It is now used for cargo operations in tandem with the main Edinburgh Airport. The then 1st Free French Squadron 340 "Ile-de-France" was located in Turnhouse during the Second World War, from 1941 to 1951, when it relocated to Orange, Vaucluse (France) under the name "Escadron de chasse 02.005 "Ile-de-France"" ("EC 2/5 "Ile-de-France""). Turnhouse is the home of Turnhouse Golf Club at Lennie Park.

It has been represented since 2017 by Christine Jardine of the Liberal Democrats. Prior to the 2005 general election, the boundaries were the same as the Edinburgh West Scottish Parliament constituency, created in 1999, later replaced by the Edinburgh Western Scottish Parliament constituency.
