Nithsdale

Nithsdale, also known as Strathnith, Stranith or Stranit, is the strath or dale of the River Nith in southern Scotland. Nithsdale was one of the medieval provinces of Scotland. The provinces gradually lost their administrative importance to the shires created from the twelfth century, with Nithsdale forming part of Dumfriesshire. A Nithsdale district covering a similar area to the medieval province was created in 1975, based in the area's main town of Dumfries. The district was abolished in 1996, since when the area has been directly administered by Dumfries and Galloway Council.

Glenkiln Sculpture Park

Glenkiln Sculpture Park was a sculpture landscape in the historic county of Kirkcudbrightshire in Dumfries and Galloway, south-west Scotland. After one of the bronze statues was stolen all the statues except the Glenkiln Cross and reclining figures have been removed. It comprised six sculptures placed in a moorland setting around Glenkiln Reservoir. The sculptures were located around 4 kilometres north-west of Shawhead, and 12 kilometres west of the town of Dumfries. Between 1951 and 1976, local landowner Sir William "Tony" Keswick assembled a collection of works by Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore, and Jacob Epstein. Keswick worked with the artists in siting their works in a natural landscape, and commissioned works. On 13 October 2013, the BBC reported that Standing Figure had been stolen. All the sculptures except "Glenkiln Cross" have been removed for security reasons on police advice and are no longer available to view. The sculptures formerly on show are: Saint John the Baptist by Auguste Rodin Visitation by Jacob Epstein Standing Figure by Henry Moore King and Queen by Henry Moore Upright Motive No. 1: Glenkiln Cross by Henry Moore Two Piece Reclining Figure No.1 by Henry Moore There is also a memorial to commemorate the diamond wedding of Sir William and Lady Keswick and another to Peter Fleming the travel writer and adventurer, friend of the Keswicks, who used to shoot on the estate.

History

The CVR was nominally independent, but was in reality controlled by the Glasgow and South Western Railway. The line was closed to passengers on 3 May 1943, during WW2 and to freight on 4 July 1949, and the track lifted in 1953. The station cost £212 to build in red brick with cream painted poster boards and chocolate-coloured framing. The extension over the front was covered with red tiles, as was the main roof. A booking office and waiting room was provided. A station master's house was provided. The passing loop and signal box at Newtonairds remained even after the 'one engine in steam' method of working was introduced circa 1936. Trains were controlled by a 'lock and block' system whereby the trains operated treadles on the single line to interact with the block instruments.
