Sultanate of Swat

The Sultanate of Swat was a medieval Dardic kingdom centred around the city of Manglawar between the 12th and 16th centuries. It was strongest of the several Dardic-speaking states in the region, and encompassed the present-day Malakand, Buner, Panjkora and Swat Valleys. The kingdom bordered Hazara region to the east, Peshawar Valley to the south, Bajaur to the west and the Kohistan region to the north.

Gandhian, Mansehra

Gandhian is a village of Mansehra District in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. It is located at 34°23'44N 73°12'30E with an altitude of 1020 metres. The village contains an ancient temple that attracts Hindus for the annual Maha Shivaratri festival which has grown in popularity over recent years from small beginnings in 1988. In July 1848, during the Second Anglo-Sikh War, there was a Sikh Brigade based in Gandhian that was reportedly disaffected with the British authorities - the following month a wholesale rebellion began in Hazara.

Khawajgan

Khawajgan is a Pashtun community in northern Pakistan. It is located in Mansehra District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, about 45 kilometers east of the Indus River and 156 kilometers from Islamabad, in the lower Pakhal Valley. It is the de facto headquarters of the Swati tribe and the second most populous village in the Pakhal Valley with prevailing Nambardari system; currently headed by Nambardar Abdul Ghafoor Khan and Abdul Zahoor Khan s/o Muhammad Maroof Khan. Khawajgan is bordered on the east by the village of Sherpur; on the west by Janglat, the Meadows of Ajmer, and Chorgali; on the north by Muradpur, the Jageer area, Tatar, and Gidarpur; and on the south by the city of Mansehra. Chitti Gatti

Chitti Gatti is a hamlet that is part of Gandhian village in Mansehra District in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. It is part of Inayatabad union council and lies in the Mansehra Tehsil of Hazara. Since early times, it is especially notable for two Hindu festivals which occur on 6th Phagan and on 1st Baisakh, as mentioned by an early Settlement Report;, dedicated to the worship of the deity Shiva. The present old Mansehra Shiva Temple here on this site, which has been recently restored, was originally constructed by a Raja of Jammu in the 1830s as an act of devotion. According to the latest archaeological research, there were probably earlier Hindu temples on this same site, but the ancient Shiva Lingam inside the temple's precincts is truly ancient and at least 2000 years old. The temple and Lingam still attract many Hindu pilgrims and tourists each year, especially at the time of the annual Maha Shivratri festival.

Mansehra Shiva Temple

Mansehra Shiv Temple is one of the oldest Hindu temples in Pakistan that is still in existence. The temple is at least 2000 to 3000 years old. The temple is situated in Chitti Gatti, 15 kilometres from Mansehra in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan. The annual Shivarathri festival in the temple is visited by people all around Pakistan and from abroad.

The last notable ruler was Sultan Awes Jahangiri, during whose reign Swat was ultimately conquered between 1510 and 1518 after a series of battles by Yusufzai Pashtuns under the leadership of Malik Ahmad Baba. This led to the Pashtunization of the Swat and Dir regions along with the migration of Dardic speakers to Swat Kohistan and Dir Kohistan. Some accounts trace the origins of Shah Mir dynasty of Kashmir from these rulers of Swat.
