Chapel Milton is a hamlet on the outskirts of Chapel-en-le-Frith on the road leading from there to Chinley and to Glossop. Within the parish of Chinley, Buxworth and Brownside, it takes its name from the site of a medieval corn mill, Maynstonfield Mill, or “Mainstonefield alias Chinley”. This mill was erected near a stream called Hockholme Brook, which is no longer marked though is thought to converge with the Black Brook at Chapel Milton. Originally built in 1391 for £12 4s 1d, the mill (which adjoined what is now Milton House) was demolished in 1946.

The hamlet is notable for two major features. The first is Chapel Milton Viaduct, bifurcating double railway viaduct crossing the Black Brook, tributary to the Goyt, on which Chapel Milton is situated. One section of the viaduct diverges and curves to the west whilst the other (built a little later) curves to the east as the line, coming up from the south, links up with the main line between Sheffield and Manchester. At one time the western section carried express trains from London (St Pancras) to Manchester Central Station. The viaducts now carry considerable loads of quarried stone from the works around Buxton. The other major feature is Chinley Chapel. The Christian congregation, which has continuously occupied this site almost since its foundation (in a barn at nearby Malcoff), was founded in 1662 at the time of the post-Cromwellian struggle between a Presbyterian or Episcopalian form for the Church of England. The present 'chapel', of considerable simplicity and beauty, was built, against considerable local opposition, in 1711. It flourishes as a centre of Christian (Congregational) worship. It is part of the Congregational Federation, and the current minister is Rev. Edmonde Openshaw. John Wesley preached in the hamlet on 28 May 1745, when the miller purportedly tried to drown him out with the sound of the watermill. Grace Bennett (née Murray), Wesley's former fiancé, is buried with the husband she later married, preacher John Bennett, in Chinley Independent Chapel. The viaduct and chapel are both listed buildings, the latter at Grade II*.

Chapel Milton Viaduct

Chapel Milton Viaduct is a Grade II listed bifurcated railway viaduct on the Great Rocks Line at its junction with the Hope Valley Line, straddling the Black Brook valley in Chapel Milton, Derbyshire, England. The first section of the viaduct, built by the Midland Railway in 1867, diverges and curves to the west while the second, built in 1890, curves to the east as the line, coming up from the south, links up with the main line between Sheffield and Manchester. Originally built to carry express trains from London St Pancras to Manchester London Road, the viaduct now carries a freight-only line transporting limestone from the quarries and works around Buxton. The viaduct is a significant and dominant structure within the small hamlet, which is largely characterised by its presence. It also passes over the Peak Forest Tramway, an early industrial railway operational from 1796. Since July 2019, an aerial shot of the double viaduct has featured in the opening titles of the regional news programme BBC North West Tonight.

Stodhart Tunnel

Stodhart Tunnel is a 100-yard (91 m) tunnel on the Peak Forest Tramway at Chapel Milton, Derbyshire. The tunnel stretches under the Chapel-en-le-Firth to Glossop Road. Although one side has been blocked up, it remains one of the oldest rail-related tunnels in the world and was also the site of one of the earliest rail-related accidents, when a laden carriage rolled into two horses, killing them.

New Smithy

New Smithy is a hamlet in the civil parish of Chinley, Buxworth and Brownside, Derbyshire, England, near the village of Chinley. It sits on the A624 trunk road from Glossop to Chapel-en-le-Frith featuring a TOTSO where left carries one down to Chapel and right heads to Chinley. There is a railway bridge over the turning, used for both freight and passengers, on the Hope Valley Line to Sheffield and Manchester; very close down the line is Chinley railway station. Next to this the Crown & Mitre pub, now converted into residential flats, is the main landmark and there are a couple of residential housing streets and terraces, and one or two businesses. Its name comes from the construction of the twin Chapel Milton Viaducts nearby; horses were used during the construction and were shod here (a smithy is a blacksmith's forge). The hamlet has an industrial past, along with the neighbouring village of Hayfield. New Smithy's Maynestone Mill was finally demolished in 1946, almost 500 years after it was opened in 1452. New Smithy is in a hilly area (being in the Peak District); geographical features include Bole Hill, Mount Famine, South Head, Eccles Pike, Mag Low, Chinley Churn, the River Sett and Combs Reservoir.
