Newton Aycliffe is a town in County Durham, England. Founded in 1947 under the New Towns Act of 1946, the town is 5 miles to the north of Darlington and 10 miles to the south of Durham. It is the oldest new town in the north of England. Together with the bordering Aycliffe Village and the north part of School Aycliffe, it forms the civil parish of Great Aycliffe. The population of the town at the time of the 2021 census was 26,415.

School Aycliffe

School Aycliffe is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Great Aycliffe, in the County Durham district, in the ceremonial county of Durham, England. It is a short distance west of Newton Aycliffe, and east of Heighington. Its name derives from a Viking called Scula, who owned land in that part of South Durham. School Aycliffe is split into two by School Aycliffe Lane. On the north side is the original village. It is under the remit of Durham County Council, and part of the parish of Great Aycliffe. The School Aycliffe Wetlands is a wildlife habitat situated on the northern edge of the village. On the southern side is a new housing estate, "The Chestnuts", under the remit of the Borough of Darlington and part of the parish of Heighington. The now-closed Aycliffe Hospital, a mental health facility, was located there before the estate was built. The father of comedian, writer and actor Mark Gatiss worked at the hospital, and it became the inspiration for a number of ideas used by Gatiss in the TV show The League Of Gentlemen.

Greenfield Academy

Greenfield Academy is a coeducational secondary school with academy status, located on the outskirts of Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, England. It was opened in 1974 and was visited by Tony Blair on 30 June 2000 when it was awarded specialist status as an Arts and Science College. Greenfield provides a range of opportunities in and out of the classroom. The strength of the provision was noted by OFSTED, who rated the school as Requires Improvement in May 2017 and again in September 2019. Previously a foundation school administered by Durham County Council, in September 2023 Greenfield Community College converted to academy status and was renamed Greenfield Academy. The school is now sponsored by the Advance Learning Partnership.

Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre

Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre is a multi-sport venue and leisure facility, located in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham. The centre was opened in 1974 and has facilities for swimming, exercise, an indoor climbing wall, and a main sports hall for sports such as basketball, badminton and indoor football. The main hall is used as the home venue for British Basketball League team Durham Wildcats, who have been using the venue consistently since 2007 having previously been based in Spennymoor. The venue has a maximum capacity for 1,200 people, with bleacher-style seating on three sides of the court.

History

The station is located on the original alignment of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, where it junctioned with the Clarence Railway at what was then known as Simpasture Junction. The station is a relatively recent addition, having only opened by British Rail on 9 January 1978.

Facilities

Station facilities here have been improved as part of the Tees Valley Metro project. The package for this station included new fully lit waiting shelters, digital CIS displays, renewed station signage and the installation of CCTV. In 2018, Arriva Rail North installed a ticket machine. The long-line Public Address system (PA) has been renewed and upgraded with pre-recorded train announcements.

Services

As of the May 2021 timetable change, the station is served by an hourly service between Saltburn and Bishop Auckland via Darlington. All services are operated by Northern Trains. Rolling stock used: Class 156 Super Sprinter and Class 158 Express Sprinter
