Barden, Richmondshire

Barden is a hamlet and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It is about 5 miles (8 km) south of Richmond. According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 49, remaining at less than 100 in the 2011 Census. Population information is kept in the parish of Hauxwell. From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the district of Richmondshire, it is now administered by the unitary North Yorkshire Council. Barden Old Hall, in the hamlet, is a grade II* listed building dating from soon after 1400.

Barden Old Hall

Barden Old Hall is a historic building in Barden, a hamlet near Richmond, North Yorkshire, in England. The building probably dates from the early 15th century, when the Eglescliff family replaced an earlier house on the same site. It originally had an I-shaped plan, but the north wing was later demolished. It has been altered at various times from the 16th to the 20th century, and was Grade II* listed in 1967. The two-storey house is built of rubble with ashlar quoins, and has a stone slate roof. It consists of a hall, now divided into smaller rooms; with a surviving cross-wing to the south, which originally contained the great chamber. The south front has two bays, and a central doorway with an initialled lintel, dated 1831. To its right is a four-light double-chamfered window with a hood mould, to the left is a two-light casement window set into a blocked doorway, and the upper floor contains casement windows. In the hall range are two blocked doorways which originally led to the screens passage, one with a four-centred arch and a hollow chamfered arris. Inside, two original fireplaces are believed to survive but are not visible, while several moulded beams can be seen.

Hauxwell Hall

Hauxwell Hall or Hawkswell Hall is a grade II* listed 17th-century country house in West Hauxwell, North Yorkshire, England, some 5 miles (8 km) south-west of Catterick. It is built of coursed sandstone, part rendered, and ashlar, with Welsh slate roofs. The main range is a 17th-century, 3-storey block with a 5-bay frontage, flanked by 18th century 2-storey wings.

East Hauxwell

East Hauxwell or Hauxwell is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It is located south of Catterick Garrison. From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the district of Richmondshire, it is now administered by the unitary North Yorkshire Council. To the west of the village lies the Grade II* listed Hauxwell Hall, a 17th-century country house belonging to the Dalton family. The name Hauxwell probably derives from the Old English Hafocswella meaning 'Hafoc's spring' or 'hawk's spring'. Alternatively, the first element may be derived from the Old Norse personal name Haukr.
