Magna Science Adventure Centre

Le Magna Science Adventure Centre est un musée pédagogique principalement destiné aux enfants, situé dans le district de Templeborough à Rotherham, en Angleterre. Il ouvre en avril 2001 dans les locaux de l'ancienne aciérie de Steel, Peech and Tozer. Les principales expositions sont réparties en quatre pavillons : la Terre, l'Air, le Feu et l'Eau. Le musée possède une aire de jeux extérieure appelée Sci-Tek et une aire de jeux aquatique appelée Aqua-Tek. Le site, long d'environ 500 m et haut de neuf étages, est souvent utilisé pour des mises en scène, des conférences et des concerts. Il accueille en moyenne 120 000 visiteurs par an. En 2006, le musée remporte le Enjoy England Gold Award for Business Tourism. Toutes les heures, l'attraction « The Big Melt » montre aux visiteurs le procédé de fabrication de l'acier dans le four à arc électrique de l'ancienne usine jusqu'à sa fermeture en 1993. En 2001, le Magna Science Adventure Centre reçoit le prix Stirling RIBA pour la reconversion innovante de l'espace de l'ancienne aciérie par les architectes Wilkinson Eyre, Mott MacDonald et Buro Happold. En l'an 50 ap. J.-C., ce lieu accueillait un camp romain.

Don Valley Stadium

Le Don Valley Stadium était un stade d'athlétisme ouvert en 1990 situé à Sheffield au Royaume-Uni. C'était le stade du Rotherham United Football Club de 2008 à 2012. En 1991 s'y déroulent les Jeux universitaires. Le stade est détruit en 2013. Il avait une capacité de 25 000 spectateurs.

Cette banlieue située à l'ouest de Rotherham et sur la rive gauche de Don prit son nom au milieu de la révolution industrielle. Faisant historiquement partie de la West Riding of Yorkshire, Masbrough se trouve dans le District métropolitain de Rotherham, au centre-ville à 0,8 km à l'ouest du centre-ville de Rotherham. Une partie de ses terres au nord se trouve aujourd'hui dans le manoir de Kimberworth, l'autre banlieue ouest de Rotherham.

History

The station was designed by the company architect John Holloway Sanders and was opened in March 1869. It also served the workers at the nearby steelworks, which had moved to or had been founded in the lower Don Valley following major changes in manufacturing methods in the mid-to-late 19th century. The station, opened by the South Yorkshire Railway, was built on the line between Sheffield Victoria and Barnsley and became a junction station with the opening of the line from Tinsley Junction (later Tinsley South Junction) to the original Rotherham station by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway. The station was located by the main Sheffield to Rotherham road in Tinsley, now on the Sheffield side of M1 by junction 34. The station had two platforms, flanking the running lines, and was surrounded by sidings belonging to steel works, in particular Hadfields. This was also the site of the siding, to the rear of the Barnsley-bound platform; the "Tinsley Banker", a locomotive, or sometimes locomotives, whose job was to assist (bank/push) trains up the gradients to Barnsley. The Tinsley layout was completed with the opening of the Tinsley Curve, which enabled trains to run directly from the Blackburn Valley line to Rotherham. The station was closed on 29 October 1951.

The site today

The station buildings are still extant near to the new footbridge, which crosses over the line and Sheffield Supertram. The tram now runs along this part of the old line and the nearest stop is Tinsley/Meadowhall South.
