Lochrin

Lochrin is a small area in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It is in the south-west corner of the city centre, to the west of Tollcross, and south of Fountainbridge. Lochrin contains a wide mixture of retail shops, leisure facilities, other businesses and tenement housing. Major new office and residential developments have replaced some of the older buildings.

When the basins at the eastern end of the Union Canal were filled in and the canal truncated in 1921, Lochrin Basin became the eastern terminus. At that time, the Leamington Lift Bridge was moved from where Fountainbridge crossed the canal to its current location just to the west of the basin.

Lochrin Basin is the centrepiece of Edinburgh Quay, a mixed-use development providing office and residential accommodation and licensed premises, which was voted the Best Regeneration project in Scotland at the Scottish Design Awards 2005. It is also the eastern end of the Forth and Clyde Canal Pathway.

Fountainbridge est un ancien quartier industriel d'Édimbourg, en Écosse, situé à l'ouest de Old Town. Il s'articule autour de la rue du même nom, qui débute à West Port et se poursuit (sous le nom de Dundee Street) vers Gorgie et Dalry. Le quartier est délimité au sud par le dernier tronçon du canal de l'Union et au nord par la West Approach Road, construite sur le tracé du Caledonian Railway (en).

Scottish Widows est la mutuelle d'assurance vie écossaise, créée à l'origine, en 1815, pour venir en aide aux femmes écossaises ayant perdu leur mari, à la suite des guerres napoléoniennes. Ces « veuves écossaises » eurent pendant longtemps peu d'influence sur les marchés financiers internationaux. Mais, à la fin des années 1970, ce fonds sert de relais aux « pension funds » (fonds de pension) américains dans l'objectif de diversifier les actifs par des placements en Europe. La Standard Life est la plus importante des Scottish Widows.

Bataille de Boroughmuir

La bataille de Boroughmuir eut lieu le 30 juillet 1335, durant la Seconde Guerre d’indépendance de l’Écosse. Ce fut une victoire pour les Écossais menés par John Randolph et Patrick Dunbar, qui défirent une armée d'invasion d'Édouard III d'Angleterre.
