Ce canton est organisé autour de Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat dans l'arrondissement de Limoges. Son altitude varie de 223 m (Saint-Priest-Taurion) à 586 m (Sauviat-sur-Vige).

Par décret du 20 février 2014, le nombre de cantons du département est divisé par deux, avec mise en application aux élections départementales de mars 2015. Le canton de Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat est conservé et s'agrandit. Il passe de 10 à 13 communes.

À l'issue du 1er tour des élections départementales de 2015, deux binômes sont en ballottage : Christelle Aupetit-Berthelemot et Jean-Claude Leblois (PS, 38,89 %) et Stéphane Le-Costoëc et Martine Menot (FN, 24,63 %). Le taux de participation est de 58 % (7 460 votants sur 12 861 inscrits) contre 57,81 % au niveau départemental et 50,17 % au niveau national. Au second tour, Christelle Aupetit-Berthelemot et Jean-Claude Leblois (PS) sont élus avec 64,42 % des suffrages exprimés et un taux de participation de 59,19 % (4 219 voix pour 7 613 votants et 12 861 inscrits).

Le premier tour des élections départementales de 2021 est marqué par un très faible taux de participation (33,26 % au niveau national). Dans le canton de Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat, ce taux de participation est de 41,55 % (5 206 votants sur 12 530 inscrits) contre 37,25 % au niveau départemental. À l'issue de ce premier tour, deux binômes sont en ballottage : Christelle Aupetit-Berthelemot et Jean-Claude Leblois (Union à gauche, 55,29 %) et Carole Pagès et Jean Valière-Vialeix (Union au centre et à droite, 25,68 %). Le second tour des élections est marqué une nouvelle fois par une abstention massive équivalente au premier tour. Les taux de participation sont de 34,36 % au niveau national, 38,38 % dans le département et 42,11 % dans le canton de Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat. Christelle Aupetit-Berthelemot et Jean-Claude Leblois (Union à gauche) sont élus avec 61,87 % des suffrages exprimés (2 974 voix pour 5 276 votants et 12 530 inscrits).

Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat (French pronunciation: [sɛ̃leɔnaʁ də nɔbla]; Occitan: Sent Liunard, [sɛ̃ ʎo'nar], alternatively Sent Liunard de Noblac), often simply referred to as Saint-Léonard, is a commune in the Haute-Vienne department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in west-central France, on a hill above the river Vienne. It is named after the 6th-century Saint Leonard of Noblac. Lajoumard

Lajoumard (French pronunciation: [laʒumaʁ]) is a village in Limousin, France. According to its inhabitants, it is one of the oldest villages in the area. Located between Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat and Le Châtenet-en-Dognon, it has about 20 old houses with stone walls. The two small driving-roads that cross the village become very narrow in the inner village, and houses are tangled as in a small Mediterranean town. Many old trails pass through Lajoumard, which is on the Way of Saint James. A typical old French school at the village's entrance has been converted to a house. Surrounded by fields and forests, Lajoumard is within nature, which brings prunes, apples, pears or chestnuts, depending on the season. The preserved integration with nature gives an idea of how villages were in early-20th century France.
