Lac Flammarion is a volcanic crater lake in Guadeloupe, which straddles the communes of Gourbeyre and Capesterre. It is situated at an altitude of 1,103 metres, and measures 90 metres by 70 metres.
The lake is entirely filled by rainfall, which is usually about 8,000 millimetres per year. The water is acidic with a pH ranging between 4.5 and 5. Its temperature ranges between 18 and 19 °C.
Flammarion is free of vegetation, but rather rare species that prefer the acidic conditions grow on its shores, such as Blechnum l'herminieri, Isachne rigidifolia and Juncus guadeloupensis, an endemic species of rush.
The crater was named by the famous alpinist Mr. Camille Thionville, chef du service de l'Enregistrement et des Domaines.

Citerne is a French volcano located in Guadeloupe, on the southeast flank of La Grande Soufrière.
It has a total height of 1,155 metres and is crowned by a circular crater containing Lac Flammarion. On the south edge of the crater there are radio and TV relay antennae. Citerne is located at the intersection of the communes of Gourbeyre, Capesterre-Belle-Eau and Trois-Rivières; the three communes meet in Lac Flammarion, meaning that the mountain's summit is located within Gourbeyre. The entire mountain is within the Guadeloupe National Park. The summit is accessible from the north by the D11, from the west by the Armistice trail, or from the south by another track.
The last eruption of Citerne occurred around 370.

La Grande Soufrière, or simply Soufrière, is an active stratovolcano on the French island of Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe. It is the highest mountain peak in the Lesser Antilles, rising 1,467 m high.
The last magmatic eruption was in 1530±30 during which the current lava dome was emplaced.
More recent eruptions have been phreatic in type. On February 8, 1843, an eruption of La Grande Soufrière caused by an earthquake killed over 5,000 people.
Significant seismic activity in 1976 led to a mass evacuation of the island's 72,000 residents. There was a bitter, and well-publicized, controversy between scientists Claude Allègre and Haroun Tazieff on whether evacuation should occur. Allègre held that inhabitants should be evacuated, just in case, while Tazieff held that the Soufrière was harmless. The prefect decided to evacuate, erring on the side of caution. The volcano erupted on August 30, 1976, but much less severely than predicted by the Allègre side. There were no fatalities and no significant damage, except for the large cost of the evacuation.
While the island was deserted, the German filmmaker Werner Herzog traveled to the abandoned town of Basse-Terre to find a peasant who had refused to leave his home on the slopes of the volcano. His journey is recorded in the film La Soufrière.
