On 2 November 2020, three gunmen stormed the campus of Kabul University in Kabul, under the former Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, killing 32 people and wounding 50 others. The attack began around the time that government officials were expected to arrive at the campus for the opening of an Iranian book fair. The three gunmen were later killed during an exchange of fire with the security forces. The attack occurred at around 11:00 A.M. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – Khorasan Province claimed responsibility.
The attack came after months of increased tensions between the Afghan government, the Taliban, and ISIL-affiliated fighters.

Kabul Medical University is located in Kabul, Afghanistan on the campus of Kabul University. The medical institution was initially maintained by collaboration with the Turkish and French sponsors. KMF developed into a single autonomous University in 2005. KMU is a coeducational center with below 1000 enrolment. It currently graduates professionals in fields of Curative Medicine, Pediatric, Stomatology, Dental and Nursing. In 2012 two new departments of Medical Technology and Anesthesia were also added. All subjects are taught in Dari and Pashto but most medical terms are in English.

The Atatürk National Children Speciality Hospital is a 200-bed children's hospital located in Kabul, Afghanistan. It is one of the largest children's hospital in the city.
The hospital is administered by the Afghan Ministry of Public Health. It is located in the affluent Shahr-e Naw neighborhood, next to the French Medical Institute for Children and very close to Kabul University.

Kabul University is one of the major and oldest institutions of higher education in Afghanistan. It is in the 3rd District of the capital Kabul near the Ministry of Higher Education. It was founded in 1931 by King Mohammed Nadir Shah, whose prime minister at the time was his younger brother, Sardar Mohammad Hashim Khan. Approximately 22,000 students attend Kabul University. In August 2021, before the Taliban takeover, nearly half were female.

Afghanistan Technical Vocational Institute also known as
ATVI, is a technical vocational institute in Afghanistan.
ATVI is to provide market oriented technical and vocational training opportunities for Afghan youth.
ATVI was established in Kabul in February 2006, as a private, non-profit, post-secondary educational institution that provides students with knowledge and skills to make them qualified employees for local businesses. This supports USAID's long-term goals of supporting the economy and particularly small businesses, increasing the employability of Afghan youth and developing a competitive Afghan workforce.
Afghan Technical Vocational Institute project aims to provide professional technical vocational education and training to qualified Afghan youth and adults.
Aiming at developing the post war economy of Afghanistan, ATVI began operations in April 2007 with US$1.8 million investment in private funding and a donation of land by MoE. ATVI is managed entirely by Afghan citizens.
In 2007, ATVI committed to provide a comprehensive educational experience for Afghan students, preparing its graduates for leadership in key sectors of agriculture/horticulture, construction, information and communications technology, and vehicle maintenance in a coeducational technical and vocational post-secondary institute in Kabul.
The first class completed its 4 semester program in March 2008 with 453 graduates, 68 girls and 385 boys. The second class graduated in May 2009 with 797 graduates of whom, 188 were girls. The class of 2009–2011 enrolled 1300 students, with 600 in the new satellite campus of ATVI East located in Laghman. Till now ATVI has graduated about 6000 Students for serving Afghanistan.
The Institute provides degrees in Information Technology, Business Management, Construction, AutoMotives and Horticulture.
