Romney Cottage

Romney Cottage is an early 18th-century home located in the Ormsgill area of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. Also known as High Cocken it is most noted as being the residence of painter George Romney, an early member of the famed Romney family. Having been born in nearby Dalton-in-Furness, Romney lived in High Cocken between the ages of 8 and 21 before relocating to Kendal and eventually London.

Ormsgill

Ormsgill is an area, current Town Council ward and former district-level ward of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. It is bordered by Hindpool, Parkside, Hawcoat, Roanhead and Walney Channel. The population of the ward in 2001 stood at 5,961,increasing to 6,033 at the 2011 Census. Almost three quarters of Ormsgill is greenspace, with the majority of residents living in the densely populated south-east corridor. The western part of the ward is predominantly industrial and includes a large Kimberly-Clark plant and numerous other industrial estates which provide a base for companies including Blyth, BT, Gyrodata, McBride and Oil States International. Whilst still an electoral ward for Barrow Town Council, the ward was combined at a district/ local authority level with Parkside ward in April 2023 to form Ormsgill and Parkside following the formation of the new Westmorland and Furness Local Authority. Ormsgill is one of the longest settled areas of what is now Barrow. It is home to the town's oldest continuously inhabited building; Ormsgill Farm House dated 1605. The building is Grade II* listed. Other sites of interest in the ward include High Cocken, former residence of George Romney, and Thorncliffe Cemetery and Crematorium, the largest graveyard in the borough.

Thorncliffe Cemetery and Crematorium

Thorncliffe Cemetery and Crematorium is a 66-acre graveyard located on Devonshire Road in the Ormsgill ward of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. The cemetery opened in 1872 and a crematorium was added to the site in 1962. A total of 189 identified war casualties are buried there, while over 40,000 cremations have taken place at Thorncliffe. Operated by the Westmorland and Furness Council, records of burials and cremations can be found at the Cemetery Office as well as the council's archives at Barrow Main Public Library. The cemetery was granted Grade II status on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens in December 2024. The cemetery's gatehouse, north lodge and Roman Catholic chapel were all completed in the early 1870s and have Grade II listed status.

Historically part of Lancashire, it is one of Barrow's most northerly wards and is bordered by Roose, Newbarns, Parkside, Ormsgill and the town of Dalton-in-Furness to the north. Whilst still an electoral ward for Barrow Town Council, the ward was combined at a district/ local authority level with Newbarns ward in April 2023 following formation of the new Westmorland and Furness Local Authority.

Ernest Pass Memorial Ground is a cricket ground in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. Prior to 1937, the ground was known as Monk's Croft. The first recorded match on the ground was in 1937, when the Lancashire Second XI played Durham in the Minor Counties Championship. The Lancashire Second XI used the ground on 4 occasions in Minor counties cricket. Cumberland first used the ground in the Minor Counties Championship when it played Northumberland in 1984. From 1984 to present, the ground has hosted 22 Minor Counties Championship matches for Cumberland and 2 MCCA Knockout Trophy matches. The ground has hosted 2 List-A matches, the first of which saw Cumberland play Northamptonshire in the 1997 NatWest Trophy. The second List-A match played on there saw Cumberland play Kent in the 2001 Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy 3rd round. The home county lost both of these matches against their professional, first-class opponents. In local domestic cricket, Ernest Pass Memorial Ground is the home ground of Barrow Cricket Club. who play in the Northern Premier Cricket League.
