Birkenhead Woodside was a railway station located at Woodside, in Birkenhead, on the Wirral Peninsula, Cheshire. It served both local services within Cheshire and long-distance services to southern England, including London.

Wirral Tramway

Wirral Tramway was a heritage tramway opened in 1995 by the Wirral Borough Council and Hamilton Quarter partnership and was operated by Blackpool Transport Services until 2005 when the council took over the licence to run the tramway. The Wirral Transport Museum and tramway were set up with the assistance of The Hamilton Quarter and various volunteer groups including Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society, 201 Bus Group and the Merseyside Bus Club. In 2023, the Museum was transferred to Big Heritage CIC and has remained closed since, along with the tramway.

German submarine U-534

German submarine U-534 is a Type IXC/40 U-boat of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine built for service during World War II. She was built in 1942 in Hamburg-Finkenwerder by Deutsche Werft AG as yard number 352. She was launched on 23 September 1942 and commissioned on 23 December with Oberleutnant zur See Herbert Nollau in command. U-534 is one of only four German World War II submarines in preserved condition remaining in the world, albeit cut into sections unlike the others, these being the IXC boat U-505 in Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry, the VIIC/41 boat U-995 at the Laboe Naval Memorial near Kiel and the XXI boat U-2540 in Bremerhaven. U-534 was used mainly for training duties; during her service she sank no other ships. A Royal Air Force bomber sank her on 5 May 1945 in the Kattegat 20 kilometres northeast of the Danish island of Anholt. U-534 was salvaged on 23 August 1993 and was moved to Woodside Ferry, Birkenhead to form the 'U-Boat Story' museum. This attraction opened on 10 February 2009 and closed in 2020. In October 2021, ownership of U-534 transferred to Big Heritage, operators of the nearby Western Approaches Museum.

Woodside, Merseyside

Woodside is an area of Birkenhead in the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral in Merseyside, England. It is situated opposite Liverpool Pier Head across the River Mersey.

Shore Road Pumping Station

The Shore Road Pumping Station is a pumping station in Birkenhead, on the Wirral Peninsula, England. It was designed by engineers James Brunlees and Charles Douglas Fox and built in the 1880s as part of the Mersey Railway. The building originally housed two steam powered beam engine pumps which removed water from the railway tunnel under the River Mersey. These had ceased working by 1959 when they were replaced by electric pumps. One of the engines, named the 'Giant Grasshopper', remains in situ and was restored to working condition. The pumping station is a three-storeyed brick construction in the Italianate architectural style, with a Welsh slate roof. An external staircase, housed within a glass structure, was added to the front of the building in the late 1980s when being converted into a museum. A similar building, the Mann Island Pumping Station, also still exists across the river in Liverpool. Shore Road Pumping Station was granted Grade II listed status in 1992 and eventually became part of the Wirral Museum, with a period 1901 Birkenhead street scene reconstructed in the yard. In 2009, as part of its Strategic Asset Review, owners Wirral Borough Council planned to sell the museum. Sometime after mid-2012 but before early 2014, the museum closed to the public. In 2023, Big Heritage announced plans to reopen the Pumping Station for that years Heritage Open Days Scheme in September. They held open days which were very well received. The Pumping Station hasn't been open since however plans are still to reopen it on a more permanent basis.
