Auburn High School is a public co-educational high school located in Hawthorn East, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, serving Year 7 to Year 12. Formerly known as Hawthorn Secondary College, it was re-established under its current name in January 2014. Auburn High School is the only Victorian government secondary school to be offering a Binational French program. Students in this program not only learn French, but learn in French according to the French National Curriculum. The Binational French program is a select-entry, internationally recognised program which offers students a dynamic and modern approach to language learning by merging French and Australian pedagogy in classes. The French Binational programme is fully accredited by the AEFE. Established in 1942 in Carlton North, Victoria, the school has had a Zionist orientation since its inception, with the establishment of the State of Israel central to its identity. Bialik's approach to Judaism is pluralistic and cross-communal. School capacity is more than 1,000 students, ranging from Creche to Year 12, with day care for children from three months to three years. Bialik offers the Victorian Certificate of Education. Bialik is a member of the Eastern Independent Schools of Melbourne. Bialik College has offered the VCE since 1990; the school has consistently been ranked as one of the top 10 in Victoria. The school is built around values of tolerance, creativity, self-expression, respect and responsibility. Advertising itself as a "non rule-based school", Alia College does not have a school uniform, allows its students to leave the school premises and does not impose any formal punishments such as detentions. Tooronga Village is a residential, office and retail centre in the suburb of Glen Iris in Melbourne, the capital of the Australian state of Victoria. It formerly referred solely to a shopping centre, which temporarily closed in March 2008. The mixed-use redevelopment by Stockland covers the former shopping centre site and part of the adjacent former brickworks site. The redeveloped shopping centre re-opened in August 2010 and now has 22 shops, cafes and restaurants in addition to anchor tenants Coles Supermarkets and 1st Choice Liquor Superstore.

History

The land was acquired in 1921 by the Education Department and was designed by E. Evan Smith. The first head teacher, William Hardy, was appointed on 27 January 1925 and the school was officially opened by the minister of education at the time, Alexander Peacock on 26 February 1925. The cost of the school was £11,800. A fair was conducted in 1927 to gain funds to build the school's library and in 1928 a playground was constructed by the Hawthorn City Council for the students. The students raised £20 for the Lord Mayor's 1950 Hospitals Appeal in 1950. It was stated "that this effort by the children should give a lead to adults". In 2024, a 40-year-old P-plater, who was a mother of a student at the school, accidentally crashed through the school fence while trying to perform a U-turn, killing an 11-year-old boy and injuring four others in the process. A similar incident occurred in 1939 when a learner driver killed a 9-year-old girl just outside the school grounds.

In 2023, the school had a student enrolment of 581 with 54 teachers (40.8 full-time equivalent) and 24 non-teaching staff (14.9 full-time equivalent). Female enrolments consisted of 249 students and Male enrolments consisted of 332 students; Indigenous enrolments accounted for a total of 0% and 39% of students had a language background other than English.
