Cochrane Park

Cochrane Park, located at Newcastle upon Tyne, England, is the principal competitive venue for football, rugby and cricket at Newcastle University. It is named after Sir Cecil Cochrane who donated 20 acres of land to the university. It has three county standard football pitches, three county standard rugby pitches, a cricket square, a lacrosse pitch and five tennis courts. The site also offers a pavilion with team changing facilities, function suite and bar facilities. Newcastle University was an official Games-Time Training Venue for the London 2012 Olympic Games, and the university's Cochrane Park sports ground was a dedicated football training venue for the Games in July 2012. The area around the Cochrane Park sports ground is also widely known as Cochrane Park and is home to Newcastle University's residential facility called Henderson Hall and the Coach Lane Campus of Northumbria University and Roy Haygarth. It consists of many streets such as Felixstowe Drive, Cochrane Park Avenue, Bretton Gardens, Turbina Drive and Vancouver Drive, opposite the Lochside Public House. It is known as a middle class area. It borders High Heaton, and has local walkways which link it to Paddy Freemans Park and Victoria Glade Park.

Longbenton

Longbenton is a district of North Tyneside, in the county of Tyne and Wear, England. It is largely occupied by an extensive estate originally built as municipal housing by Newcastle City Council in the 1930s and extended in the 1950s. It is served by the Tyne and Wear Metro stations Longbenton Metro station and Four Lane Ends Metro Station. Nearby places are Killingworth, Forest Hall, Four Lane Ends, West Moor, Heaton and South Gosforth, in Newcastle upon Tyne. The Longbenton and Killingworth Urban Area had a population of 34,878 in 2001. This figure increased to 37,070 in 2011.

Wills Building

The Wills Building is a well-known landmark in Newcastle upon Tyne. It was built in the Art Deco style as a cigarette factory in the late 1940s for W. D. & H. O. Wills. It is situated on the New Coast Road from Newcastle upon Tyne to the Billy Mill roundabout in North Shields, and overlooks the Wallsend golf course. It was originally built with the office block facing onto the New Coast Road with the factory itself forming the wings and rear of the building, making the whole factory complex into a pair of quadrangles. The complex included a theatre and leisure facilities for the staff. After the factory closed in 1986 it stood empty for a number of years. During this period it was a sad sight with windows smashed by vandals, but the front section of the building could not be demolished, having gained Grade II listed status in November 1986. Many local people thought it should be redeveloped and various schemes were put forward, including conversion into a hotel, but none of these came to fruition. The rear sections of the factory complex were demolished at around this time as the buildings were too impregnated with nicotine to be cost-effectively restored. The main building was converted into luxury residential apartments by George Wimpey, with its exterior and stonework carefully restored. It was officially reopened as The Wills Building in November 1999. Modern housing was built on the brownfield land to the rear. The Wills Building is featured in "Newcastle + Gateshead Architecture And Heritage" by Faulkner, Beacock and Jones (page 286, ISBN 1-904438-29-6). One feature of the conversion from factory to apartments was the use of blue tinted glass, as can be seen in the photograph, for the windows facing south looking over the New Coast Road, helping to reduce the solar gain of the large windows. Another notable feature of the conversion was the excellence of the soundproofing between the flats.

North Heaton

North Heaton is a ward of Newcastle City Council in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. It covers the northern part of the Heaton district as well as High Heaton. The Ward population at the 2011 census was 9,574. There are two schools in the area, Heaton Manor School and Ravenswood Primary School. The Coast Road which is the main traffic artery out of the east of the city runs through the ward. The Ward is represented by 3 Councillors and as of 07/05/2015 the ward political composition is made up of 1 Labour and 2 Liberal Democrat Councillors.
