Cathcart Cemetery

Cathcart Cemetery is a cemetery in East Renfrewshire, Scotland, which was opened in 1876 . It is named after the nearby neighbourhood of Cathcart on the southern outskirts of Glasgow, but does not actually fall within the city boundaries, instead being a salient of East Renfrewshire. It is bounded to the east by the White Cart Water, with Linn Park on the opposite bank. Other surrounding residential areas to the west are Muirend and Netherlee. The grounds of Holmwood House, a mansion designed by Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, are located a short distance to the north. It is divided into two sections, the older section and the newer Linn extension, divided by Netherlee Road. There are war graves in both sections; a total of 247 Commonwealth service personnel of both World Wars are buried here. There is also a Jewish section. The cemetery contains the William and Mary Hood mausoleum, which is based upon the Philae Temple of Hathor. The cemetery gatehouse had been derelict for ten years until it was restored as a family home, winning a Glasgow Institute of Architects Design Award in 2011.

Holmwood House

Holmwood House is the finest and most elaborate residential villa designed by the Scottish architect Alexander "Greek" Thomson. It is also rare in retaining much of its original interior decor, and being open to the public. A Category A listed building, the villa is located at 61–63 Netherlee Road, Cathcart, in the southern suburbs of Glasgow, and is owned by the National Trust for Scotland. Holmwood is considered to be immensely influential by several architectural historians, because the design as published in Villa and Cottage Architecture: select examples of country and suburban residence recently erected in 1868 may have influenced Frank Lloyd Wright and other proto-modernist architects.

The ABC cinema (originally called the Toledo), on Clarkston Road in the Muirend area of Glasgow, existed from 1933 to 2001. At the time of its closing, it was the second-oldest working cinema in Glasgow, Scotland.

The current Member of Parliament (MP) is Gordon McKee of the Labour Party who gained the seat from Scottish National Party's Stewart McDonald at the 2024 general election. The constituency was first used in the 2005 general election, and is the successor to Glasgow Cathcart.
