Sokho

Sokho is the name given to two ancient towns in the territorial domain of Judah as mentioned in the Hebrew Bible, west of the Judean hills. Both towns were given the name Shuweikah in Arabic, a diminutive of the Arabic shawk, meaning "thorn". The remains of both have since been identified. One is located about 10 miles southwest of Hebron and has been identified with the twin ruins known as Khirbet Shuwaikah Fauka and Tahta, 6 kilometres southwest of As-Samu in the Hebron Hills district. Eusebius makes mention of this twin site in his Onomasticon. The other ruin is situated on a hilltop overlooking the Elah Valley between Adullam and Azekah, in the lower stratum of the Judaean foothills. Today it is a popular tourist attraction better known as Givat HaTurmusim. The site, occupied as early as the Iron Age, was visited by Claude Conder in 1881, who writes that it was already a ruin in his days, with two wells in the valley towards the west. A third town by this name, Shuwaykah, was located in the Hefer region, north of Tulkarm.

Bayt Nattif

Bayt Nattif or Beit Nattif was a Palestinian village, located some 20 kilometers southwest of Jerusalem, midway on the ancient Roman road between Beit Guvrin and Jerusalem, and 21 km northwest of Hebron. The village was on a hilltop, surrounded by olive groves and almonds, with woodlands of oak and carobs overlooking Wadi es-Sunt to its south. It contained several shrines, including one dedicated to el-Sheykh Ibrahim. Roughly a dozen khirbas lay in the vicinity. During the British Mandate it was part of the Hebron Subdistrict. Bayt Nattif was depopulated during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War on October 21, 1948 under Operation Ha-Har.

Tel Yarmuth or Khirbet Yarmuk is an ancient Near East archaeological site in Israel located 25 kilometers southwest of Jerusalem and near modern Beit Shemesh. It is a large primarily single-period site and has been suggested as possibly being the city of Jarmuth, being only a tentative identification, as it is based solely on the similarity of the Hebrew name with the Arabic name and its areal location.

History

Netiv HaLamed-Heh was established on 16 August 1949 by demobilised soldiers on land that had belonged to the village of Bayt Nattif. The soldiers had been members of the 4th Company of the Palmach's Harel Brigade, and the settlement was initially named Peled (an acronym for Pluga Daled, lit. Daled Company, daled being the 4th letter of the Hebrew alphabet). It was later renamed after the 35 Haganah soldiers killed in a convoy sent to resupply the Gush Etzion kibbutzim during the 1947–48 Civil War (Lamed-Heh is 35 in Hebrew numerals). In 2007, the Vertigo Dance Company has established the Vertigo Eco-Art Village as an educational center for ecology and arts at Kibbutz Netiv HaLamed-Heh.
