Jackton distillery

Jackton Distillery is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The distillery was founded in 2020 by the Kean family and is located on the O'Cathain Farm. It takes its name from the nearby village of Jackton. The company has released three blended whiskies under the Raer brand. In addition to whisky, the site also produces gin and vodka. As of 2025 it is one of twenty-three malt whisky distilleries in the Scottish Lowlands.

Jackton

Jackton is a suburban village lying on the western periphery of East Kilbride in South Lanarkshire, on the B764 Eaglesham Road connecting it to the village of Eaglesham. It is also adjacent to Thorntonhall, and the two villages share a newsletter, the Peel News, derived from the name of the road connecting the two. The settlement, as well as an area of surrounding farmland going as far as Lindsayfield was designated as a Community Growth Area for East Kilbride in South Lanarkshire's Local Development Plan 2. The development of new build housing, additional retail locations, and a new primary school are under construction as of July 2025. Jackton lies approximately 150 metres (490 ft) above sea level. It is also the site of one of the two Scottish Training Centres for Police Scotland. The area is served by Thorntonhall railway station, which is around 1+1⁄2 miles (2.4 km) away, and Hairmyres railway station, which is around 1 mile (2 km) away. The Gill Burn runs through the outskirts of the settlement. There is only one bus stop on each side of the road for the village. The only buses running through are the 395/396 run by Henderson Travel. In 2019 it was approved to build a further 70 homes in the area, consisting of 4 and 5 bedroomed properties. Later, a large Community Growth Area was designated covering Jackton, surrounding the existing village. The development, creating a continuous built-up area over 1.5 square miles (3.9 km2) connecting with Lindsayfield, included a primary school and a new link road. A large roundabout was constructed. In 2019, one of the streets in the area was the scene of gunfire, which caused a large police presence while it was investigated. In 2020, Jackton distillery was founded near the village. The area is represented by the local Jackton and Thorntonhall Community Council. The community lies on the very western edge of South Lanarkshire, near the border with East Renfrewshire, and is part of the UK Parliament constituency of East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow, as well as the Scottish Parliament Constituency of East Kilbride.

Hairmyres

Hairmyres is an area of the town of East Kilbride in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is situated on the west side of the town, on the historical main road to Eaglesham and Kilmarnock. Nearby roads connect Hairmyres to the major A726 Queensway/Glasgow Southern Orbital dual carriageway. It is 2+1⁄4 miles (3.5 kilometres) from the Glasgow City Council boundary at the Carmunnock Bypass and nine miles (fourteen kilometres) south of the city centre of Glasgow. Neighbouring areas include Gardenhall, Mossneuk, Jackton, Peel Park, and Westwood. Falling under the council's East Kilbride West ward, it gives its name to University Hospital Hairmyres, the general hospital for the town and surrounding area which originally opened in 1904, long before East Kilbride was developed as a new town after World War II. The district railway station (on the branch of the Glasgow South Western Line) is at the bottom of the hospital access road; trains are operated on a half-hourly basis by ScotRail to Glasgow Central and East Kilbride. In 2024, construction began on a new station to replace Hairmyres, 600m to the west, which will take the Hairmyres name once finished. Next to Hairmyres Station is Abercrombie House, one of the headquarters of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. The building originally belonged to the Overseas Development Administration, which relocated part of its operations here in 1981 as part of a government initiative to create employment in a region subject to major job losses following years of industrial decline. The area now has a small shopping area known as the St James Retail Park. It is easily identifiable by its yellow and orange coloured walls. It hosts a few services such as eateries, a hairdresser and a vet.

A726 road

The A726 road in Scotland is a major route with several distinct sections with different characteristics and names; owing to its stages of construction, since 2005 it has two separate parts, the first running between Strathaven in South Lanarkshire and Junction 5 of the M77 motorway south of Newton Mearns in East Renfrewshire via East Kilbride, and the other running between Junction 3 of the M77 and the M898 motorway near the Erskine Bridge, via Paisley and Junction 29 of the M8 motorway near Glasgow International Airport.

Mossneuk

Mossneuk is a predominantly residential area in the South-West of the Scottish new town East Kilbride, in South Lanarkshire. The area has very few facilities within it, as it is served by shops and conveniences by the nearby areas of Greenhills, Hairmyres and Gardenhall. The area, however, has a community hall, a church and a primary school, care home and a park. Mossneuk is the site of one of South Lanarkshire's 124 primary schools, Mossneuk Primary School. As of 2011/2012, the school roll is approximately 450. The area also contains one of the town's nine Church of Scotland churches - Mossneuk Parish Church. The church is one of several Eco-Congregations in South Lanarkshire and the associate minister, Rev. George Sneddon is also the Chaplain to Mossneuk Primary School. The church hosts the 7th East Kilbride Girls' Brigade and 11th East Kilbride Boys' Brigade. The area was the site of the murder of local schoolboy, 16-year-old Jack Frew in May 2010.
