The blockade of Wonsan, or the siege of Wonsan, from February 16, 1951, to July 27, 1953, during the Korean War, was the longest naval blockade in modern history, lasting 861 days. United Nations naval forces, primarily from the United States, kept the strategically important city of Wonsan from being used by the North Korean Navy.
The blockade diverted communist troops from the front line. North Korean artillery fired at the American fleet was mostly ineffective, and the city was heavily damaged by UN naval aircraft and warships.

Wonsan, previously known as Wonsanjin, is a port city and naval base located in Kangwon Province, North Korea, on the eastern side of the Korean Peninsula, on the Sea of Japan. It is the provincial capital. The port was opened by Japanese forces in 1880.
Before the 1950–1953 Korean War, it fell within the jurisdiction of the then South Hamgyong province, and during the war, it was the location of the Blockade of Wonsan. The population of the city was estimated at 329,207 in 2013. Notable people from Wonsan include Kim Ki-nam, a diplomat and former Vice Chairman of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea.
In 2013, it was announced that Wonsan would be converted into a summer destination with resorts and entertainment. Having spent his childhood years there, Kim Jong Un has expressed significant interest in developing the region, with the construction of new infrastructure such as Kalma Airport, a dual-use civilian international airport and military proving ground. A state corporation, the Wonsan Zone Development Corporation, has been established with feasibility studies for a wide variety of hotels and commercial and industrial development.

Paehwa station is a railway station in Paehwa-ri, Anbyŏn county, Kangwŏn province, North Korea, on the Kangwŏn Line of the Korean State Railway.
The station, along with the rest of the former Kyŏngwŏn Line, was opened by the Japanese on 16 August 1914.
Facilities
The airfield has a single asphalt runway 04/22 measuring 1560 x 46 feet (475 x 14 m). It is sited across a river from the Kang Da Ri Highway strip, and recent satellite photos appear to show a bridge connecting the two under construction. The reported runway appears to be on substantial fill and possibly extends through a nearby hill and emerges on the other side. The field is a few miles southwest of Wonsan Airport.
