Westhoughton ( west-HAW-tən) is a town and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, Greater Manchester, England, 4 miles (6 km) southwest of Bolton, 5 miles (8 km) east of Wigan and 13 miles (21 km) northwest of Manchester. Within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire, Westhoughton was once a centre for coal mining, cotton-spinning and textile manufacture. It had a population of 24,974 at the 2011 Census. Westhoughton incorporates several former villages and hamlets which have their own distinctive character, sports traditions and amenities, including Wingates, White Horse, Over Hulton, Four Gates, Chequerbent, Hunger Hill, Snydale, Hart Common, Marsh Brook, Daisy Hill and Dobb Brow.

Hindley ( HIND-lee) is a town within the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan in Greater Manchester, England. It is three miles (4.8 km) east of Wigan and covers an area of 2,580 acres (1,044 ha). Within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire, Hindley (which includes Hindley Green) borders the towns and villages of Ince-in-Makerfield, Aspull, Westhoughton, Atherton and Westleigh in the former borough of Leigh. In 2001, Hindley had a population of 23,457, increasing to 28,000 at the 2011 Census. It forms part of the wider Greater Manchester Urban Area.

Outwood Academy Hindley

Outwood Academy Hindley (formerly Mornington High School and then Hindley High School) is a coeducational secondary school located in Hindley in the English county of Greater Manchester. Mornington High School was established in the early 1960s and became a comprehensive in 1976. The school was renamed Hindley High School in 2006, and was then rated "Good" each year by Ofsted inspectors who praised the improvements made by students during their journey throughout the school. Ratings for the school first changed in 2015, when inspectors concluded that plans by leaders for school improvements did not adequately reflect student progress and for the first time since its renaming inspectors deemed the school "required improvement". The school remained at this stage until 2020, where inspectors deemed the school inadequate; particular attention was drawn to the leadership and management of the school. Previously a foundation school administered by Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council, in January 2022 Hindley High School converted to academy status and was renamed Outwood Academy Hindley. The school is now sponsored by Outwood Grange Academies Trust. Outwood Academy Hindley offers GCSEs, BTECs, Cambridge Nationals and ASDAN awards as programmes of study for pupils. The school also offers evening adult education classes to the local community.
