Radcliffe College, Oxford

Radcliffe College is a proposed constituent college of the University of Oxford in England and the first to be located in Headington. The central university plans to found Radcliffe College alongside its broader redevelopment of the Grade II listed Warneford Hospital, a mental health institution, and creation of a new 'Warneford Park' complex. In close proximity to the John Radcliffe Hospital, the new college is to have a focus on medicine and provide teaching for postgraduate medical students, 250 of whom will live on site. The college will be named after John Radcliffe, the Yorkshire-born physician and politician.

The Oxford Artisan Distillery was the first ever legal distillery in Oxford, England. It is the first certified organic "grain-to-glass" distillery in the United Kingdom, covering all parts of the distillery process. The distillery is located at the top end of South Park, Headington, in the Old Depot of Oxford City Council at the former Cheney Farm.

History

The hospital opened as the Oxford Lunatic Asylum in July 1826. It was designed by Richard Ingleman (1777–1838) and built of Headington stone. The name commemorates the philanthropist Samuel Wilson Warneford. It was renamed the Warneford Hospital in 1843 and extended by J.C. Buckler in 1852 and by William Wilkinson in 1877. The hospital originally charged fees for treatment of middle-class patients with a fund eventually being set up for the care of poor patients. Men and women were originally segregated on different sides of the hospital with this practice continuing into the 1950s.

Warneford Park

In 2023, Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust announced plans to redevelop the hospital as part of a new graduate college of the University of Oxford (provisionally entitled Radcliffe College in planning documents). The planning application was submitted in August 2025. A petition expressed concerns about the increase in car parking spaces.
