Redmain, Cumbria

Redmain is a small hamlet in the Isel Valley and parish of Blindcrake within the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England. The hamlet lies on the south-facing slopes above the River Derwent, in an elevated position of 475 feet (145 m), giving panoramas across the Isel Valley and Lake District Fells. Nearby are the hamlets of Isel and Sunderland and the village of Blindcrake. The hamlet is just under four miles north-east of Cockermouth, off the old Roman road to Carlisle (A595). It is 12 miles from Keswick and, along the A66, it is 29 miles from the M6 motorway at Penrith.

Bridekirk

Bridekirk is a village and civil parish in the Cumberland district in the county of Cumbria, England. It is around 3.2 kilometres (2 mi) north of the Derwent river and about the same distance from the nearest large town of Cockermouth just south of the river. Bridekirk is just outside the Lake District National Park (1 mile (1.6 km) by road) and is not far from the Maryport and Carlisle Railway. Bridekirk ecclesiastical parish had in 1811 a population of 1552 persons. It has since been altered in area by the formation of separate parishes: Great Broughton, in 1863, which included Ribton Christ Church, Cockermouth, in 1865, was given part of the township of Papcastle Broughton Moor parish in 1898 was formed with Little Broughton In addition to the township of Bridekirk itself, Bridekirk ecclesiastical parish now only contains Papcastle, Dovenby, and Tallentire. The civil parish of Bridekirk comprises only Bridekirk, Tallentire and Dovenby villages.

Blindcrake

Blindcrake is a village and civil parish within the Isel Valley, in the Lake District National Park, in Cumbria, England, historically part of Cumberland. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 287, increasing to 348 at the 2011 Census. The parish includes Blindcrake village and the hamlets of Redmain, Isel and Sunderland. Blindcrake village is one of 23 designated conservation areas of the National Park Planning Authority. this status is largely based on its mediaeval strip field pattern which is described as "undoubtedly the finest example of its type in the Lake District".

Cockermouth School

Cockermouth School is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form located in Cockermouth in the English county of Cumbria. Previously a community school administered by Cumbria County Council, Cockermouth School converted to academy status in September 2015. However the school continues to coordinate with Cumberland Council for admissions.

Clints Crags

Clints Crags is a small fell in the north of the English Lake District near Blindcrake, Cumbria. It has its own chapter in Alfred Wainwright's The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. He describes a circular walk from Blindcrake, and laments that at the time of writing (1974): "This is a walk on public footpaths, but until somebody removes the barbed wire and other obstacles to legitimate progress it can be recommended only to gymnasts." It reaches 804 feet (245 m). Since the time of writing the barbed wire has been removed and the path to the summit is clear of obstructions. Clints Crags offers a pleasant and easy stroll to the summit from the village of Blindcrake. The gradient of the crags is much steeper rising north out of the Isel valley; however. there are no footpaths to the crags from the valley bottom. There is an old limestone quarry near the summit of the hill, now an SSSI, home to a rare species of newt that breeds in the old quarry lakes. The summit is a large expanse of limestone outcrops and pavement, which is also a designated SSSI. The fragile limestone habitat supports various rare calcareous species of flora and fauna.
