San José Villanueva is a district of the municipality of La Libertad Este in the La Libertad Department of El Salvador. According to the 2024 population and housing census, the district has 19,150 inhabitants, up from 13,576 in 2007. The territory has an area of about 34.37 km2 and lies at an elevation of roughly 552 m above sea level. San José Villanueva forms part of the southern portion of the department and is bordered by Nuevo Cuscatlán to the north, Huizúcar to the east, the port of La Libertad to the south and Zaragoza to the west. As part of a nationwide municipal reorganization applied in May 2024, the former municipality of San José Villanueva became a district within the newly created municipality of La Libertad Este.
The district contains a health clinic, several schools, an institute, a Catholic parish church and a number of Protestant churches. In recent decades San José Villanueva has experienced residential growth with new upper-middle-class housing projects and gated communities, while retaining an important agricultural base oriented to grains, coffee and pasture grasses. Livestock activities involving cattle, pigs and poultry, as well as coffee processing and small-scale dairy production, also contribute to the local economy. The area is linked to neighbouring districts and to the coastal zone by paved access roads. Forest cover and land-use change in the surroundings have been monitored in international deforestation datasets.
Of particular note is the local archaeological site known as Piedra Pintada, a large rock panel with pre-Hispanic rock art and hieroglyphic-like motifs located in the hills south of the urban center.
