The Battle of Peñacerrada, a battle of the First Carlist War, occurred at Peñacerrada (Urizaharra) on June 20–22, 1838. The Liberals were commanded by Pedro Saarsfield and Manuel Lorenzo, who had crossed the Ebro after the Battle of Los Arcos. They routed 1,500 Carlist troops situated at Peñecerrada. Saarsfield and Lorenzo entered Vitoria-Gasteiz and Bilbao within a week without encountering resistance.

The Toloño, also known as the Sierra de Cantabria, is a mountain range in the province of Álava in the Basque Country in northern Spain.
From the west, the range rises from the Conchas de Haro where the River Ebro enters the region of La Rioja at 445 metres above sea level, and from there runs east forming the northern border of the Rioja Alavesa, separating the Rioja region from the rest of Álava. Its highest point is Mount Toloño at 1271 metres above sea level in the municipality of Labastida.
It is noted for its steep rock faces on the southern side, and extensive forests in the north. The range is a landmark visible throughout the region.

The Escucha Formation is a geological formation in La Rioja and Teruel provinces of northeastern Spain whose strata date back to the late Aptian to middle Albian stages of the Early Cretaceous. Dinosaur remains are among the fossils that have been recovered from the formation.
The approximately 70 m thick formation underlies the Utrillas Formation and overlies Castrillo de la Reina, Benassal & Oliete Formations. The Escucha Formation comprises siltstones, mudstones, sandstones, coal, siltstones and amber, in which several fossil insects were found. The formation was deposited in a variety of continental to paralic environments.
