Bishop O'Dowd High School is a Catholic, co-educational, college preparatory school in Oakland, California, administered by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland and named after the late auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, James T. O'Dowd. The school requires all students to attend school liturgies, to enroll in religious studies courses each semester, and to complete its 4-year service learning program. O’Dowd is a Catholic high school community of 1,250 students. The school has 129 faculty and staff members and more than 82 part-time coaches, teachers and moderators.

The Bay Area Technology School is a charter school located in Oakland, California, United States. BayTech is a college prep middle and high school which serves 6th through 12th grade students from the East Bay Region. The school was established in 2004 by Willow Education Foundation.
In 2018, BayTech was under investigation for fraud by the Oakland Unified School District, when several senior staff, board members, and its principal abruptly resigned from their positions. The school has been linked to the Gulen movement by local press.

On September 28, 2022, one person was ultimately killed and five people were wounded from gun violence that occurred at King Estates School Complex, an area where three different high schools share a complex campus in Oakland, California. The shooting happened during school hours at 12:45 p.m., when two gunmen, believed by Oakland authorities to not attend the school, entered the campus of Rudsdale High School and opened thirty rounds on people present on campus. While it is reported that the shooting had gang or group overtones, the victims hit were all allegedly innocent bystanders. No suspects have yet been arrested or identified. There is surveillance footage showing two suspected gunmen on campus, and a third person of interest involved.
The sole fatality, a carpenter who worked on the campus, died from his injuries in a hospital on November 17, 2022.
There have been no suspects arrested, or any persons of interest identified, as of 2025.

It became notable as the first middle school in the United States to be officially named or renamed after US President Barack Obama in March 2009. The middle school, which opened in 2007, was formerly known as the Alternative Learning Community. The name change was prompted by the school's students.
