Ayr

Ayr (en gaélique écossais, Inbhir Àir) est une ville portuaire située sur le Firth of Clyde, dans le sud-ouest de l'Écosse. La ville eut le statut de burgh royal de 1205 à 1975 et fut le chef-lieu de l'ancien comté d'Ayrshire. Ayr est la capitale administrative du council area du South Ayrshire. Elle est située dans la région de lieutenance d'Ayrshire and Arran. De 1975 à 1996, elle était la capitale administrative du district de Kyle and Carrick, au sein de la région du Strathclyde. Au recensement de 2006, la population de la ville s'élevait à 46 050 habitants. En 2002, elle fut l'une des quatre villes écossaises en compétition pour accueillir le jubilé d'or de la reine Élisabeth II (rôle qui fut attribué à Stirling).

Ayr ( AIR; Scots: Ayr; Scottish Gaelic: Inbhir Àir meaning "confluence of the River Àir") is a town situated on the southwest coast of Scotland. A former royal burgh, today it is the administrative centre of South Ayrshire Council, and the historic county town of Ayrshire. With a population of 46,982, Ayr is the 15th largest settlement in Scotland and second largest town in Ayrshire by population. The town is contiguous with the smaller town of Prestwick to the north. Ayr submitted unsuccessful bids for city status in 2000 and 2002, and as part of the wider South Ayrshire area in 2022. Ayr was established as a Royal Burgh in 1205 and is the county town of Ayrshire. It served as Ayrshire's central marketplace and harbour throughout the medieval period and was a port during the early modern period. On the southern bank of the River Ayr sit the ramparts of a citadel constructed by Oliver Cromwell's men during the mid-17th century. Towards the south of the town is the birthplace of Scottish poet Robert Burns in the suburb of Alloway. Ayr has been a popular tourist resort since the expansion of the railway in 1840 owing to the town's fine beach and its links to golfing and Robert Burns. Ayr is one of the largest retail centres in the south of Scotland and in 2014 was recognised by the Royal Society for Public Health as the second healthiest town centre in the United Kingdom. Ayr has hosted the Scottish Grand National horseracing steeplechase annually since 1965 and the Scottish International Airshow annually since 2014. The town also accommodates the headquarters of the Ayr Advertiser and Ayrshire Post newspapers.

Beresford Park

Beresford Park was a former football stadium in town of Ayr in Scotland. The ground was the former home of Scottish Football League teams Ayr FC and Ayr Parkhouse before their merger to form Ayr United FC. The ground was located in the centre of the town, adjacent to Burns statue square, where the current Odeon cinema stands. Parkhouse street and Beresford Terrace now stand on the former site of the stadium named after Ayr Parkhouse FC, former tenants of the ground and the ground itself respectively.

Ayr Ice Rink

Ayr Ice Rink was an ice arena in Ayr, Scotland that opened in 1939 and was used for ice skating, ice hockey and curling. The rink was notable as being the home of professional ice hockey clubs Ayr Raiders and Ayr Bruins. The building was located at 21 Beresford Terrace on the former site of Beresford Park, home of Ayr Parkhouse Football Club. Ayr Ice Rink Ltd purchased the land from London Midland and Scottish Railway in 1938 to build the rink. The property was demolished in 1972 to make way for a Safeway supermarket and today the site is occupied by two retail stores and carpark. A new ice rink was built at Limekiln Road on the site of the defunct Tams Brig Stadium in 1973, but closed permanently in September 2023. It was predominantly used for curling but figure skating and recreational ice hockey.

Ayr railway station serves the town of Ayr in South Ayrshire, Scotland. It is situated in Smith Street, off Burns Statue Square. The station, which is managed by ScotRail, is on the Ayrshire Coast Line, 41+1⁄2 miles (66.8 km) south-west of Glasgow Central.
