St George's Church, Barrow-in-Furness

St. George's Church is in St George's Square, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. It is the oldest active Anglican parish church in the town. The church is in the deanery of Barrow, the archdeaconry of Westmorland and Furness, and the diocese of Carlisle. Its benefice is united with those of St Aidan, Newbarns, St Luke, Risedale, and St Perran, Roose, to form the South Barrow Team Ministry. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. It stands at the southeast extremity of the town.

St. George's Square, in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England is a public space that acted as the centre of the town during the late 19th century. The square now lies in the southernmost fringes of the Central ward close to the Port of Barrow.

Barrow-in-Furness Strand railway station

Barrow-in-Furness Strand railway station was the first permanent railway terminus to be built in Barrow-in-Furness, England. Located on the Strand at St. George's Square close to the town's docks its functioning life was short, however the building itself continued to be used as the headquarters of the Furness Railway for a number of years. The station opened in 1863 having replaced a wooden structure which was erected in 1846 at adjacent Rabbit Hill. The station at St. George's square ceased commercial operations in 1882 upon the completion of a new loop line and much larger station at Abbey Road. Barrow-in-Furness Central railway station, later simply renamed Barrow-in-Furness railway station has been the town's primary station ever since. The railway station building is Grade II listed and spent most of its later life as a working men's club.

Central Barrow

Central Barrow refers both to the town centre of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England and to the Town Council electoral ward that roughly covers the eastern part of that town centre. In 2001 5,584 (ranking 5th out of 13) lived in the Central ward. The population density was 55.96 per hectare, which was well above the local average of 9.24, and England average, 3.77. The population of Central ward had reduced to 4,583 at the 2011 Census. Central Barrow is amongst the 3% most deprived areas in the country and households have an average weekly income around £100 lower than the region's average, however the area being the central business district of the town is also home to many of Barrow's retail outlets, as well as a large amount of offices, restaurants and governmental buildings. Part of the £200 million Waterfront Barrow-in-Furness project is being constructed in the southern part of Central Barrow (including the new Marina Village). Whilst still an electoral ward for Barrow Town Council, the ward was combined at a district/ local authority level with Barrow Island and Hindpool wards in April 2023 following formation of the new Westmorland and Furness Local Authority and be named 'Old Barrow'. In a bid to tackle issues related with Central Barrow such as deprivation, unemployment and poor housing quality/choice, Barrow Borough Council is currently preparing the 'Central Barrow Masterplan' which will set out guidelines for the redevelopment of Central Barrow. The plan will also put forward proposals for a bus station/transport interchange to replace the existing shelters outside of the town hall. It is not yet known when the plan will be published or what exactly it will include.

Alfred Barrow Health Centre

Alfred Barrow Health Centre is a primary care health centre in Barrow-in-Furness. It is housed in a refurbishment of the former Alfred Barrow School with a newly built extension housing the patient-facing services and all clinical spaces. It was developed by a public private partnership, eLIFT Cumbria, involving Community Health Partnerships. It has a base for the North West Ambulance Service. The contractor was ESH Construction. It opened in November 2019 with a celebration event. It houses three GP surgeries - Abbey Road Surgery, Risedale Surgery, Atkinson Health Centre - and services provided by North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust and University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust as well as facilities for Morecambe Bay CCG, BAE Systems and Boots Pharmacy.
