Kostiantynivka

Kostiantynivka is an industrial city in Donetsk Oblast, eastern Ukraine. Kostiantynivka is considered the capital of the glass industry of Ukraine. Together with neighboring cities, it forms the Kramatorsk agglomeration. During the Soviet era, the city developed into a major centre for the production of ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, glass, iron, zinc, steel, chemical, and construction industries, as well as an important transit railway junction. It was the administrative center of the Kostiantynivka Raion until 2020, although it did not belong to it. After the raion was abolished, Kostiantynivka was incorporated into the Kramatorsk Raion and Kostiantynivka urban hromada. Its population is approximately 67,350. The population declined sharply due to Russian offensives towards the city, from ~15,000 in February 2025, ~8500 in July 2025, to ~6800 in August 2025. In late 2025, the city became an active battleground between Russian and Ukrainian military forces. By early 2026, the Donetsk Regional State Administration estimated the population of Kostiantynivka at ~2,800.

Kostiantynivka Raion

Kostiantynivka Raion was one of the administrative raions of Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine. It covered approximately 4.4 percent of the oblast's total area. The raion was created on 7 March 1923 as part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Its administrative center was the city of Kostiantynivka, although the city itself was not administratively part of the Kostiantynivka Raion and was incorporated as a city of oblast significance. The raion was abolished on 18 July 2020 as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, which reduced the number of raions of Donetsk Oblast to eight, of which only five were controlled by the government. The last estimate of the raion population was 17,166. The 2001 Ukrainian Census gave the population of 21,132.

July 2022 Chasiv Yar missile strike

A missile strike on two residential buildings in Chasiv Yar was carried out by the Russian army at 21:17 local time on 9 July 2022, during the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. At least 48 people were killed. Due to the impact, a five-story residential building partially collapsed. Two entrances were completely destroyed.

Chasiv Yar

Chasiv Yar is a city in Bakhmut Raion, Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. It is located 10 kilometres west of Bakhmut and is the center of Chasiv Yar urban hromada. In January 2022, it had a population of 12,250, though RBC News claimed the population in May 2024 had been reduced to 600 due to evacuations from Russian shelling and fighting within the city. The Siverskyi Donets – Donbas Canal runs through the east of Chasiv Yar. Just a small part of the city – the Kanal microdistrict – is east of the canal.

Name

It was named from a natural landmark or park near the village, called Urochyshche Stinky. It was first marked on a map in 1888.

History

According to the 1926 census in the Artemivsk Raion, it was under the Vyroliubivka village council. 10 residents of the village were killed during World War II. On 13 August 1954 the village was moved to the Mykolaivka village council. On 9 April 1992, the villages of Stinky, Chervone (Mykolaivka village council) and Izhevka (Kindrativka village council) were transferred to the Novodmytrivka village council.

Politics

In the 2014 Ukrainian parliamentary elections, there were 162 registered voters from Stinky, with 29.01% turnout. The most votes (34.04%) were cast for the Communist Party of Ukraine, 23.40% for Opposition Bloc, and 14.88% for People's Front.

Demographics

As of the 1989 Soviet census, the settlement had a population of 363 people, of whom 158 were men and 205 were women. By the time of the 2001 Ukrainian census, the population had shrunk to 265. Their native languages were:
