Hairmyres railway station

Hairmyres railway station is a railway station between the Hairmyres and Peel Park areas of East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, Greater Glasgow, Scotland. The station is managed by ScotRail and is on the East Kilbride–Glasgow Central line. The line was historically single-tracked through the station, with a passing loop approximately 398 metres (435 yd) east of Hairmyres Station, which extended for approximately 584 metres (639 yd) to Kirktonholme Road. It was crossed mid-loop by the A726 Queensway overbridge. Although the line was always single between Busby and East Kilbride, sidings existed to serve the former Radio Times factory in the College Milton Industrial Estate adjacent to the station. These were closed and lifted in the late 1960s. The Hairmyres Hospital and Department for International Development's office are located nearby. In 2025, the station reopened at a new location, 600m to the west of its original site.

Hairmyres

Hairmyres is an area of the town of East Kilbride in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is situated on the west side of the town, on the historical main road to Eaglesham and Kilmarnock. Nearby roads connect Hairmyres to the major A726 Queensway/Glasgow Southern Orbital dual carriageway. It is 2+1⁄4 miles (3.5 kilometres) from the Glasgow City Council boundary at the Carmunnock Bypass and nine miles (fourteen kilometres) south of the city centre of Glasgow. Neighbouring areas include Gardenhall, Mossneuk, Jackton, Peel Park, and Westwood. Falling under the council's East Kilbride West ward, it gives its name to University Hospital Hairmyres, the general hospital for the town and surrounding area which originally opened in 1904, long before East Kilbride was developed as a new town after World War II. The district railway station (on the branch of the Glasgow South Western Line) is at the bottom of the hospital access road; trains are operated on a half-hourly basis by ScotRail to Glasgow Central and East Kilbride. In 2024, construction began on a new station to replace Hairmyres, 600m to the west, which will take the Hairmyres name once finished. Next to Hairmyres Station is Abercrombie House, one of the headquarters of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. The building originally belonged to the Overseas Development Administration, which relocated part of its operations here in 1981 as part of a government initiative to create employment in a region subject to major job losses following years of industrial decline. The area now has a small shopping area known as the St James Retail Park. It is easily identifiable by its yellow and orange coloured walls. It hosts a few services such as eateries, a hairdresser and a vet.

Westwood, East Kilbride

Westwood is an area of the Scottish new town East Kilbride. It was name-checked by one of its former inhabitants, Roddy Frame of Aztec Camera, in the song "Somewhere In My Heart". Part of the song's lyrics proclaim "From Westwood to Hollywood, The one thing that's understood, Is that you can't buy time, But you can sell your soul, And the closest thing to heaven is rock and roll". Westwood is home to one secondary School, which under South Lanarkshire Council's Schools modernisation programme, was the first of the new schools in the town to be built, near to the site of the original school building. It also boasts two primary schools, East Milton Primary School based in Vancouver Drive and Canberra Primary School which is located on Belmont Drive. Westwood like its other neighbourhoods has a parade of shops, being based in Westwood Square. Westwood is home to Westwood Amateur Football Club who play in the Strathclyde Saturday Morning Amateur Football League.
