Grimstone, North Yorkshire

Grimstone or Grimston is a hamlet and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It lies beside the main B1363 road between York and Helmsley. Grimston lies in the Howardian Hills just south of the North York Moors National Park and close to Ampleforth Abbey and College. In 2015 it had an estimated population of 60. It was part of the Ryedale district between 1974 and 2023. It is now administered by North Yorkshire Council. Grimston is small, and is made up of around 14 households. Historically, it originates from an old manorial estate , and several of the buildings still hold related names: Grimston Manor, Grimston Manor Farm, Grimston Lodge, Grimston Cottage and Grimston Grange. Grimston was recorded in the Domesday Book as Grimeston.

Holy Cross Church is a parish church which serves the village and parish of Gilling East in North Yorkshire, England. The parish contains the villages of Gilling, Cawton, and Grimston. The church is dedicated to the Holy Cross, although it has been referred to as either the church of Saint Mary or the church of Saint Helena (the queen who by legend discovered the true cross) in the past. It is part of a four-church benefice which includes Gilling, Oswaldkirk, Stonegrave, and Ampleforth under a single vicar, Rev James Trowsdale. The church was designated as a Grade I listed building on 4 January 1955.

Gilling East

Gilling East is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England, on the main B1363 road between York and Helmsley, 2 miles (3.2 km) south of Oswaldkirk and 5 miles (8 km) south of Helmsley. It is named "East" to distinguish it from Gilling West near Richmond, some 32 miles (51 km) away. It had a population of 321 at the 2001 Census, which had risen to 345 at the 2011 census. In 2015, North Yorkshire County Council estimated the population to be 360. The village lies in the Howardian Hills just south of the North York Moors National Park and close to Ampleforth Abbey and College. It was part of the Ryedale district between 1974 and 2023. It is now administered by North Yorkshire Council.
