Christian Street Historic District

The Christian Street Historic District is an historic district located along Christian Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. It is also known as Black Doctors' Row. The narrow district extends approximately six city blocks, from the 1400 block of Christian Street to the intersection of Christian Street with 20th Street. Its width is one block on either side of Christian Street, extending to Montrose Street and Webster Street. It is within the area known as South Philadelphia and the neighborhood known as Graduate Hospital. As of 2021, the district included approximately 192 buildings, some of which themselves have historical significance. The district was originally proposed for permanent preservation in 2021. The district was at its heyday in the early 20th century when it was a center for homes, businesses, and cultural institutions of African-Americans, with many of its black residents among the city's most prominent. The district was at that time termed "Main Street for Philadelphia's Black Elite." The neighborhood was officially designated as an historic district by unanimous vote of the Philadelphia Historical Commission in July 2022.

Marian Anderson House

The Marian Anderson House is a historic home located in the Southwest Center City neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Built circa 1870 in the same neighborhood where opera singer and civil rights activist Marian Anderson was born 27 years later, this two-story, brick rowhouse dwelling was designed in the Italianate style. Purchased by Anderson in 1924, the same year she became the first African-American concert artist to record spirituals for a major American recording company, she continued to reside here until 1943. The house is currently home to the Marian Anderson Museum and Historical Society.

It is an area adjacent to the Fitler Square and Rittenhouse Square neighborhoods to the north and Point Breeze to the south, and is home to community service organizations, restaurants, churches, retail establishments, and some light industry.

History and features

The building was designed by Irwin T. Catharine and built in 1925–1926. It is a three-story, 10-bay by 3-bay, made of bricks on a raised basement in the Art Deco-style. The entrance features a portico with Doric order columns and terra cotta colored tiles. It also has a stone cornice with colored terra cotta tile and a brick parapet. The school was named for Edwin M. Stanton. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. It feeds students to South Philadelphia High School.
