Hegang is a prefecture-level city in Heilongjiang province of China, situated in the southeastern section of the Lesser Khingan Range, facing Jiamusi across the Songhua River to the south and Russia's Jewish Autonomous Oblast across the Amur River to the north. Hegang is one of the principal coal-producing cities in China. Hegang covers an administrative area of 14,679.88 km2 and according to the 2020 Chinese census, has a population of 891,271 inhabitants, of whom 545,404 lived in the built-up area made of 6 urban districts.By the end of 2024, the total registered population of the city will be 935,000, including 756,000 in urban areas.

Hegang No. 1 High School is a public high school in Hegang, China. It was established in March 1950.
The province of Heilongjiang awarded the school the label of key high school in 1963. The school was awarded the label of exemplar senior high school in 2000. In the 2014 book History of Hegan, Yupu Zhang wrote that Hegan No. 1 High School was "identified as one of the top 100 middle schools in the country and one of the 'first batch of diversified and characteristic provincial pilot schools for general high schools' in the province".

The 2009 Heilongjiang mine explosion was a mining accident that occurred on November 21, 2009, near Hegang in the Heilongjiang, northeastern China, which killed 108 people. A further 29 people were hospitalised. The explosion occurred in the Xinxing coal mine shortly before dawn, at 02:30 CST, when 528 people were believed to be in the pit. Of these, 420 are believed to have been rescued.
