4S Ranch is an unincorporated, master-planned community in the North County area of San Diego County, California. It is located about 25 miles north of downtown San Diego and 13 miles east of the Pacific Ocean, just outside the incorporated city limits of San Diego.
The community spans about 2,900 acres of unincorporated San Diego County, bordering the San Diego communities of Rancho Bernardo to the east, Black Mountain Ranch to the west, and Rancho Peñasquitos to the south.

Black Mountain Ranch is a suburban community in the northern part of San Diego, California. Black Mountain Ranch encompasses 5,100 acres and is located north of Rancho Peñasquitos and Torrey Highlands, south of the Santa Fe Valley, east of Fairbanks Ranch and Rancho Santa Fe, and west of 4S Ranch.
The development of Black Mountain Ranch took over 17 years to complete and was led by Fred Maas, a local San Diego businessman with a background in politics and sustainable building practices.
Black Mountain Ranch primarily consists of two separate housing developments known as Santaluz and Del Sur. Santaluz is the area in the southern half of Black Mountain Ranch while Del Sur comprises the northern half.
Primary access to the community is via Camino Del Sur, Carmel Valley Road, San Dieguito Road and Camino Del Norte.
There is a city park, South Village Neighborhood Park, near Willow Grove Elementary School at 14756 Via Azul, San Diego, CA 92127, located just a block off Camino del Sur. There is also the Black Mountain Open Space Park off Carmel Valley Road at Black Mountain Road, east of Camino del Sur.
The area is served by Poway Unified School District and includes Del Sur Elementary School, Willow Grove Elementary and Del Norte High School.
The nearest shopping areas are 4S Ranch to the north, Carmel Mountain Ranch to the east, Torrey Highlands to the south, and Pacific Highlands Ranch to the west. Del Sur Town Center opened in October 2015.
The area is part of San Diego City Council District 5, served by Marni von Wilpert.
It falls under the Rancho Penasquitos Planning Board, and holds two seats on the board.

Lake Hodges is a reservoir in San Diego, California. It is about 31 miles north of downtown San Diego, just north of the Rancho Bernardo community, and just south of the city's border with Escondido. When full, the reservoir covers 1,234 acres and has a maximum water depth of 115 feet and a shoreline of 27 miles. Lake Hodges is owned by the City of San Diego and supplies water to the San Dieguito Water District and Santa Fe Irrigation District.
Lake Hodges has a total capacity of 30,251 acre-feet of water. The surface elevation of the lake is maintained at a maximum of 280 feet above sea level, 35 feet lower than the dam's spillway to ensure safe operations. The lake level can fluctuate significantly, depending upon the amount of runoff received from the San Dieguito River drainage basin. Interstate 15 crosses Lake Hodges via the Lake Hodges Bridge.
Approximately 1,000 feet west of the I-15 freeway bridge is a bicycle/pedestrian bridge which opened on May 15, 2009, and is the longest stressed ribbon bridge in the world.

THSSD is the first Orthodox Jewish girls high school in the city of San Diego and currently the only school of its kind in San Diego County. It is the first Western Association of Schools and Colleges–accredited Jewish high school in the city.
