Grantown-on-Spey

Grantown-on-Spey (Scottish Gaelic: Baile nan Granndach) is a town in the Highland Council Area, historically within the county of Moray. It is located on a low plateau at Freuchie beside the river Spey at the northern edge of the Cairngorm mountains, about 20 miles (32 km) south-east of Inverness (35 miles or 56 km by road).

Inverallan

Inverallan is a former parish in Morayshire in Scotland. It is generally equivalent to the area now known as Grantown. At an unknown date before the Reformation, it joined together with the parishes of Cromdale and Advie to form the parish of "Cromdale, Inverallan and Advie", which later became a civil parish and in which Inverallen remained until 1869. Grantown was founded there in 1765.

Grantown-on-Spey railway station was opened with the Inverness and Perth Junction Railway in 1863. Originally appearing on timetables as 'Grantown', the name was changed by British Railways. At the same time, the former GNSR station 'Grantown-on-Spey' was renamed similarly as 'Grantown-on-Spey'.

Strathspey is a region of the Scottish Highlands comprising part of the valley of the Spey. It includes the towns of Aviemore, Boat of Garten, Grantown-on-Spey, and Aberlour. Strathspey, as traditionally defined, stretches from Upper Craigellachie to Lower Craigellachie. Above it is Badenoch and below it is the low-lying region of Speyside. The region is administratively divided between Moray and the Highland council area. Speyside is one of the main centres of the Scotch whisky industry, with a high concentration of single malt distilleries in the region, including the Glenfiddich and Balvenie distilleries. Scotland's Malt Whisky Trail is a tourism initiative featuring seven working Speyside distilleries, a historic distillery and the Speyside Cooperage. The concept was created in the early 1980s. The region is a natural for whisky distillers because of three benefits: it is close to barley farms, contains the River Spey and is close to the port of Garmouth. The region also hosts the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival.

The town was founded in 1765 as a planned settlement, and was originally called simply Grantown after Sir James Grant. The addition 'on Spey' was added by the burgh council in 1898. The town has several listed 18th and 19th century buildings, including several large hotels, and serves as a regional centre for tourism and services in the Strathspey region. The town is twinned with Notre-Dame-de-Monts in the Vendée, Pays de la Loire, France.
