Westnewton is a small village and civil parish in Cumberland, Cumbria, England. The 2011 census had a population of 265. The village of Westnewton is situated to the north-west of the Lake District, on the relatively flat plain halfway between the Lake District hills and the Solway Firth. It is a small village located two miles north of Aspatria, on the B5301 Aspatria and Silloth road. The small hamlet of New Cowper is located one-and-a-half miles to the north-west. The landscape generally in this area is one of gently undulating fields, relatively devoid of features other than the thorn field-hedges, with shallow valleys carrying small streams, such as the Black Dub beck. Westnewton has a school called St Matthew's Church of England School, a church called St Matthew's Church, and a cemetery. There used to be a public house called the Swan Inn but this has closed.

Mealrigg is a settlement in the civil parish of Westnewton, close to the boundary with the civil parish of Holme St. Cuthbert in Cumbria, England. Mealrigg is situated one mile north-west of Westnewton, a quarter-of-a-mile east of New Cowper, and half-a-mile south of Aikshaw. Other nearby settlements include Jericho, Tarns, and Langrigg. Historically, Mealrigg formed part of the township of Langrigg and Mealrigg.

It is a community school administered by Cumberland Council, and is the feeder school for Oughterside Primary School and Richmond Hill School in Aspatria, Blennerhasset School in Blennerhasset, St Michael's CE Primary School in Bothel, Plumbland CE School in Parsonby and St Matthew's CE School in Westnewton. Beacon Hill Community School offers GCSEs and BTECs as programmes of study for pupils. The school shares a governing body with Solway Community School as part of the Cumbria Futures Federation. The school also has a relationship with Aspatria Hornets Rugby Club, with the school using the clubs facilities.

St Kentigern's Church, Aspatria

St Kentigern's Church stands in the village of Aspatria, Cumbria, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the rural deanery of Maryport, the archdeaconry of Carlisle and the diocese of Carlisle. The church has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade II* listed building. It is dedicated to St Kentigern, the apostle of Strathclyde, whom it is believed passed by and preached at the Holy well, on his way into exile in Wales, in the 6th century. He was also known as Mungo, which means good friend.
