As a suburb of Chicago, Highland Park is located on the North Shore of the Chicago metropolitan area, about 25 miles (40 km) north of downtown. According to the United States Census Bureau, the median household income in Highland Park exceeded an estimated $159,567 in 2022.

The Obee House was a historic house at 1642 Green Bay Road in Highland Park, Illinois. The house was built circa 1874 for the Obee family, who owned the house for a century following its construction. The house had a vernacular clapboard form with Victorian elements. Its decorative features included a bay window and hooded window moldings. Its interior featured a wooden staircase, detailed baseboards, and pine flooring.
The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 29, 1982. It was demolished in the late 1990s and replaced by a condominium development and removed from the National Register in 2020.

The Highland Park Water Tower is a historic water tower on the west side of Green Bay Road in Highland Park, Illinois. Built in 1929–30, the brick water tower is 125 feet tall, making it the tallest structure in Highland Park. The tower is Highland Park's third water tower and serves as a visual and symbolic landmark for the city. Its design features tall brick arches on its eight sides and a classical pediment above its entrance. The tower's water tank is capable of holding 500,000 U.S. gallons.
The tower was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 29, 1982.

The Renaissance Place is one of the first "new urbanist" mixed-use developments of its kind located in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park, Illinois. It was designed in a vernacular style respectful of the history of this place. It includes several different buildings and styles of architecture appropriate for each use. The project opened in late 2007, and was home to the third Saks Fifth Avenue location in Illinois until it closed in December 2012. Even though it is a new development, occupancy is almost 100%. Above street-level retailers are condominiums, offices and a fine arts movie theater served by underground parking, grade level parking and street parking. The development has been featured in the 2005 Urban Land Institute Handbook on Mixed Use Development; the 2003 Urban Land Institute Handbook on Town Center Development; and the 2002 Urban Land Institute Handbook on Place Making: Developing Town Centers, Main Streets and Urban Villages. The facility was master planned and designed by the international architectural firm of Suttle Mindlin and has been a major factor in the revitalization of downtown Highland Park.

On July 4, 2022, a mass shooting occurred during an Independence Day parade in Highland Park, Illinois, United States. The shooting occurred at 10:14 a.m., roughly 15 minutes after the parade had started. Seven people were killed, and 48 others were wounded by bullets or shrapnel.
Authorities apprehended 21-year-old Robert Eugene Crimo III more than eight hours after the shooting and charged him the next day with seven counts of first-degree murder. On July 27, the charges were upgraded to 21 counts of first-degree murder, 48 counts of attempted murder, and 48 counts of aggravated battery.
Crimo pleaded guilty to all charges on March 3, 2025, shortly before his trial was to begin. At that time his sentencing was set for April 23. By law, he faced a mandatory life sentence. On April 24, 2025, Crimo was sentenced to 7 consecutive life sentences plus 2,400 years without parole.
