Holy Cross Catholic High School, Chorley

Holy Cross Catholic High School is a Roman Catholic Voluntary aided comprehensive school in Chorley, Lancashire, England. The school provides co-educational education for approximately 830 pupils in the 11-16 age range, most of whom reside in Chorley itself, or the surrounding villages of Chorley Borough, part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Liverpool. The headteacher, Mr. Ivan Gaughan, joined the school in April 2014, after nine years as Deputy Headteacher at Blessed Trinity RC College, Burnley.

Duxbury Woods

Duxbury Woods is an area of woodland and parkland situated in Chorley, Lancashire, at the foot of the West Pennine Moors. The area originally existed as a township with the council meeting at the Yarrow Bridge pub; this was absorbed into Chorley Rural District in the early 20th century. Duxbury today is home to Duxbury Jubilee Park, Duxbury Golf Course, the woods and the River Yarrow. It was also home to Duxbury Hall, the seat of the Standish family. The estate and grounds still exist with the gardens, stables, coachhouse, 16th century barn and Lodges on Bolton Road and Wigan Lane remaining. The Hall itself was built in the 17th century, and was demolished to make way for housing in 1957. Many consider the great barn (which remains) to be the original home of the pilgrim father Myles Standish. Duxbury, Massachusetts was named after this area.

Yarrow Valley Country Park

Yarrow Valley Country Park is a country park managed by Chorley Borough Council in Lancashire, England. It follows the River Yarrow for about 6 miles (9.7 km). It contains much woodland and includes nature reserves, the best known being Birkacre and Duxbury Woods. Parts of the park are reclaimed collieries and other old industrial sites. A visitors' centre is on site, with regular conservation events. Angling is permitted on the two lodges. The park provides recreation for the nearby town of Chorley and its surrounding villages. The Council notes that access points have been improved in recent years.

Duxbury Hall

Duxbury Hall was a 19th-century country house in Duxbury Park estate in Duxbury Woods, Duxbury, Lancashire that has been demolished. The hall was a plain two-storey building faced in millstone grit ashlar standing in a well-wooded park 1½ miles (2.5 km) south of Chorley. The entrance on the east front was via a Doric portico. In the cellars was evidence of an earlier building, probably a brick-built house enclosing a courtyard on three sides. The later building followed the same plan, having north and south wings extending westward from the east front. The roof was made of green slate.

Yarrow Bridge

Yarrow Bridge is a small road bridge which crosses the River Yarrow in Chorley, Lancashire, England. The bridge carries the A6 road over the river. There is also a pub and garage next door to bridge which carries the same name. The bridge has existed since the late 17th century when the road leading to Bolton (A6) was put east away from Duxbury Woods. Before this a previous road bridge existed with its foundations still remaining within the woodland. A spa was also established behind the bridge on Hoggs Lane in the 1850s; so much was the popularity of the spa was that over 10,000 people attended the spa on one day in remarkably hot summer of 1850. The small cottage which exists in the shadow of the bridge is the only remnant of the spa's existence. The public house which is adjacent and carries the bridge's name is one of the oldest in Chorley. The establishment was previously known as the Standish Arms after the local manor lords of Duxbury Hall and carries local historical significance as it was believed to be the staging point for local constables from Preston during the Battle of Duxbury Hall in 1813. The bridge is also at the point were the River Yarrow and the Black Brook meet; a smaller adjacent bridge carries Hoggs Lane over the Black Brook.
