San José Pinula is a town, with a population of 67,327, and a municipality in the Department of Guatemala in the Republic of Guatemala in Central America. It is located 21 kilometers from the capital, Guatemala City. The city was established in 1886 as Villorio San José. The city is surrounded by mountains. Until a few years ago, the economy was based on the growing of corn, as well as some vegetables such as guisquil, chayote or pataste. However, the growth of Guatemala City in recent years has transformed farmland into suburban neighborhoods. Golf courses, such as Hacienda Nueva Country Club which used to be a convent in the 16th century and Alta Vista Country Club, both considered world-class, are now in and around San José Pinula.
The city is governed by municipal authorities elected every four years. The predominant religion in the region is Roman Catholic, followed by evangelical Protestant denominations. The patron saint and namesake of the town is San José, whose day and is annually celebrated on March 19. Currently, the town of San José Pinula is coping with rapid growth which has resulted in increased traffic congestion in the mornings and evenings.
On March 8, 2017 there was a fire in a youth home filled with 500 children. There had been a riot about the conditions and about sexual abuse by the staff. 41 girls were killed.

Pavon Prison is a prison in Guatemala. It is located outside the town of Fraijanes near Guatemala City. It is a part of the Dirección General del Sistema Penitenciario de Guatemala.
It was built in the late-1970s and over time it became overcrowded and authorities decided to only control the perimeters of the prison and let the prisoners run the interior on their own. Since 1996, a society developed, with cocaine operations run by Colombian drug lords incarcerated there.

The Guatemala City Guatemala Temple is a temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Guatemala City, Guatemala. The intent to construct the temple was announced on April 1, 1981, by church president Spencer W. Kimball. A groundbreaking was held on September 12, 1982, and when construction was completed, a public open house was held November 27 to December 10, 1984. The temple was dedicated in sessions held from December 14 to 16, 1984, by Gordon B. Hinckley, second counselor in the church's First Presidency. It was the church's first temple in Central America and became a regional landmark of the faith. A group of 75 Qʼeqchiʼ Latter-day Saints traveled for two days by foot, paddle boat, and bus to attend the dedication.
The temple is on a 1.43-acre site in Vista Hermosa 1, has six-spires, and an exterior of natural white Guatemalan marble. The interior has four ordinance rooms, three sealing rooms, and a baptistry.
