Martin Luther King Jr. Shoreline

Martin Luther King Jr. Shoreline is a regional park located on the shores of the San Leandro Bay in Oakland, California. Part of the East Bay Regional Parks system, it is named after Civil Rights Movement leader Martin Luther King Jr. The park was established in 1980 on a 741 acres (300 ha) tract of land and water leased from the Oakland Airport.

The Boeing School of Aeronautics was a school that operated in Oakland, California from 1929 to 1945. It taught the design, maintenance, and flying of aircraft made by the Boeing Airplane Company. In its later years, the school was known as the United Air Lines Training Center.

Doolittle Maintenance and Storage Facility

The Doolittle Maintenance and Storage Facility is the operations management center for the BART Oakland Airport Connector. The building is used for storage and maintenance of the Cable Liner cars, and is also the powerhouse for the system's 12-foot drive wheels. In the initial plans for the Oakland Airport Connector, the Doolittle Drive facility was planned to also serve as a passenger station. The station was not built, but the facility's design allows for it to be built in the future. Vehicles stop at the structure in both directions to switch cable loops, but do not allow passengers to disembark.

2012 Oikos University shooting

On April 2, 2012, a mass shooting occurred inside Oikos University, a Korean Christian college in Oakland, California, United States. Seven people were killed, and three others were injured. One L. Goh, a former student at the school, was taken into custody and identified as the suspect in the shooting. It is the deadliest mass killing in the city's history.

When it was dedicated, it was known as San Leandro Bay Regional Shoreline. Under Secretary of the Department of Interior James A. Joseph spoke at the dedication. In 1992, it was renamed for Martin Luther King Jr. at the request of Oakland mayor Elihu Harris and local religious leaders.

Facilities

The Shoreline Center is an indoor-outdoor venue that is available for parties, weddings, corporate, school and other group events. It contains a main room, an outdoor deck and a commercial kitchen. Catering can be provided. The facility is rated for 60 guests (seated) or 125 (standing). The Tidewater Boating Center is a complex that includes an ADA-accessible dock, a boat house and boat storage area, training area, Recreation Department offices and a security residence. The area of the complex is 12,300 square feet (1,140 m2).
